On slow motion please

Tomorrow I need to make some slow motion shots and I wonder whether to shoot 50i (as the book says) or to shoot 25P and get the slow motion in post.

If I shoot those few shots at 50i, all the other shots will be progressive. That’s to say: it will be five 50i shots in the middle of 25P footage. Do you think the few 50i shots will fit well between other shots recorded at 25P? or should I get the slow motion in post?

If I record 50i the V Detail Freq will be THICK and the progressive footage will be THIN…

If I shoot 50i… should I get the same settings (master ped, matrix, gamma…) as in progressive mode?

All help is greatly apreciated.

I believe if you bring 50i into a 25p timeline and slow it down to 50% of original speed, your editing app will make a full frame out of each field. The result will be softer than your existing 'true' 25p footage, but the motion will be wonderfully smooth. Can't comment on the detail settings though - Barry?

oh yea, and re: doing it in post - sure, but be prepared for a hit in rendering depending on the solution you use. You can get good results, but it depends on how extreme the motion is you're slowing down - Twixor and ReTime work well for this purpose.

There are two methods you could get to get slow-mo: you could shoot it in 25p, and play it back at a 50% rate, or you could shoot in 50i and play it back at a 50% rate.

The 25p version will retain all the vertical resolution, and basically just add duplicate frames. As a result, the motion may be a bit choppy.

The 50i version, done correctly, will result in glass-smooth perfect motion rendering. However, it will be noticeably lower in vertical resolution. So, you have to choose which is more important to you: vertical resolution? or smoother motion? You can have either, but not both.

Im not an editor so I've wondered about this alot myself...

What if you shot in progressive mode and later needed to slow it down? Are their ways to mitigate the "bit choppy"ness of the capture? Like if you captured to an uncompressed format

(I should probably research uncompressed dv more myself before asking the question but... er...)

Hey Barry, and if I shoot 30p instead of 24p and slow it down just a bit, 80%, you think it'd still get choppy?

No, shooting 30P and playing it at 80% speed in a 24P project will not give you choppiness, it'll give you the absolute smoothest slow motion you'll ever see.
