On Location Lighting

The white glass versions of the sodium lamps are much better than the streetlighting yellow ones, and unless you have particular colour rendition issues can often do a good job with some tweaking afterwards - but if you have specific colours you need to record, such as fabrics, paintings and other critical subjects, the missing parts of the spectrum do really odd things. They also flicker quite badly if you need to use higher shutter speeds, so anyone considering faster frame rate HD may have a problem.

What do you guys think about something like this? http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/scripts/details.php?cat=Site%20Lighting&product=23269

I don't see why these are SO much cheaper then the professional studio lighting.

I've actually got some of those =- bought for site lighting, and they are rubbish. I cannot think of another word. The little handle at the top gets so hot it's useless at moving the lamp housing - which repeatedly drops down. The stands don't go up to my shoulders, so you can't get light above the heads of your subjects where you need them. The stands, and all of it really, are very thin tubing, and just having the things stored in the shed outside has dented them and the yellow paint is flaking off. The plastic parts are that sort of brittle hard stuff and two mouldings have cracked already, and they've been used just once! They can be sold cheaply because the materials they are made from are cheap too!

So basically stay away haha. I think I will venture down the path of searching for good second/third/fourth hand deals.

Have you guys had any luck with carboot sales? Thought that could be an idea.

I have also been looking on ebay but am having trouble finding any decent second hand studio lighting. Maybe it's because I live in the UK and I am searching ebay.co.uk? Is it very expensive/risky to ship from america?

Any other suggestions on where to pick up some good deals on lights?

Keep us updated on what you eventually buy! Oh, and absolutely, positively do not buy anything made by Britek. :)

Hello again,

Just to update you guys I just bought a couple of 1000w strand lights with bulbs, barn doors and gel holders for £50 a piece. Don't know how good of a deal that is but I reckon it's pretty good.

They didn't come with a stand so now I was wondering if you guys can recommend a good place to buy a couple of stands? Are those cheapish ones on ebay a really bad idea?
