On da Plane

Ever since that moron tried to light his gitch on fire, I've been worried about traveling into the States with my gear. I've got a shoot end of the month, and am really unsure what I want/can do with my stuff. I'm getting a Lowel Jet Set kit with the smaller shoulder-case (hard case), that can fit inside my regular travel bag, my tripod can go in there too with a bit of protection, and then a few clothes.. but it is the critical stuff.. the camera and my Sennheiser G2 mics that worries me. Ideally it would go in something that can also hold my little netbook and assorted batteries. I won't need to pull anything out during the flight, I've got a Walkman in my pocket, but I also would like something I can shove in the overhead and not worry about.

Can I even bring this stuff on US-bound planes ? Last thing I want to do is be forced to check that bag and it's not designed to be handled by the luggage apes.

What are you guys doing these days with your stuff ? I don't have to haul stuff any further than the curb to a rental car, so that part is fairly cushy.

Actually, with good insurance, I don't mind checking that in even, but the possibility of getting to my location without a camera would 'upset' my client somewhat. In a pinch, I can buy lights at Wal Mart if I need to, not a new camera.

Porta-Brace is out, to flashy. a good tool bag maybe...

Is it a roll of the dice what you get to carry on, depending on the screener's mood, or what ?

I flew with my camera after the crotch bomber and it was fine. BUT that was only within the US. Not sure what international security is like.
I have a Kata backpack. It's a smaller one, designed for DSLR cameras. I have to remove the matte box and lay the camera down in it. The upside is that it will fit in the overhead of smaller domestic planes.

I flew from canada back into the us, a week after that all happened. They had even imposed a all out on ban on all carry on bags. I had my gear in a pelican 1510 the max carry on size case, and i didnt have any isssues. Went through security and customs alright, they just opened it up and took a peek at my gear, and let me go through. Although being the only one with a carry on bag on a full flight, much less a pelican, i got some interesting looks from other passengers. But i didnt have any problems.

Heh i just noticed your from winnipeg, I was back home in brandon for christmas, and it was the winnipeg airport i went through and had no issues. You should be fine, just let them know what you have in the bags since camera gear is on the exempt list.
