On camera ND vs 4 x 5.65/4 x 4

Looking at purchasing a few filters. Definitely picking up a polarizing filter & possibly a star filter for my new matte-box, but I was just curious if it's worth buying physical ND filters considering that my HPX has 3 that I'm pretty happy with now. Are there any advantages?

The advantages are better selection and greater control. You can get heavier ND, and you can layer them.

Fair enough. Anyone have any suggestions for NDs as stops go. I'm actually not 100% on what the camera has stock. I think it's 1/4, 1/16 & 1 /64. Is it worth purchasing those varieties just to use them in conjunction with each other because filters are expensive? I'm wondering if it's worth starting with a couple that aren't included on the cam and then building on that.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about grads. I don't see the use for colored grads when shooting digital, but ND grads are a solid idea.
