While the mic mount on the Sony PMW series was useless, the mount on the FS7 is a bit improved, though not quite enough for my needs. Presently, my Rode NT4 is strapped to the mount with two black tie wraps to hold it together, as the mic barrel is too large (but it's the only way to get a stereo mic with 20-20,000Hz usable range, so it's what I got). I have these mics also on my EX1 and EX3, but I had to craft a custom mount out of a sheet of aluminum with holes drilled to mount to the camera body where the original mount was attached.
The FS7 mount is closer to 'being there', as it was only necessary to use the zip ties to hold the device closed. However, that mic is heavy and the support is fragile so it's only a matter of time before it breaks. I need to find some all metal support that takes the 15mm rod and provides a shock mount (to isolate vibration from the Shogun recorder's fan from transferring to the mic).
The NT4's mic body is about an inch or more in diameter and weighs 2lbs. For 7 years, I contemplated removing the non-functional cylinder of the mic and machining a new jack to attached to the head assembly, but it's a precision CNC milling job, not something I can do with crude tools, so it never got done. Over the years, I have searched for a more compact mic with comparable specs, but I can't find anything phantom powered that go as low, and handle as loud a SPL as the NT4. One day, I might be filming a wedding in a church with a pipe organ, the next, I might be filming a civil war reenactment with live cannon fire. I've grown too attached to my Rode mics to give up the impressive sonic experience I get during playback. So I need to find a better way to accommodate the mic.
It may be early for 3rd party developers but since there's so much other rigging available for the FS7, perhaps I overlooked a good mic support that handles larger mics.
