On camera lights!

What up?

I've searched the achives for hours and can't find a good thread about on camera lights for the DVX.

I'm not totally sure what I need to be looking for except that I need a light! hahaha. I'll be using it mostly for shooting break dancing events in clubs where the lighting is never really good enough, also be using it to shoot, mtb bike, bmx, skiing, stuff like that. So something robust would be a plus!!!

What are people using, what do you recommend?

Thanks!
Buck

How come I've never heard of these before?? they look great, and at a decent price too. I do a lot event shooting (weddings), and the crappy canon onboard lights are like a damn blinding spotlight. These would really improve on lowlight receptions, I presume.

What about the battery on these? I see you have to buy a separate batty pack for any long term use. Do they last as long as they say they do?

Vidled... I've seen you on these boards forever, and I still didn't know about the lights! What happens when I mention DVXuser? I get them for free, right? ;)

On Camera Lights

Before I give my 2 cents in.. I have been censored before on this messageboard for expressing my unbiased opinion. So I will first state that I am all for supporting the independent DVX suppliers that support this site. eg: Vidled lights and DVX user batteries.

And i love this forum for the vast information it provides me but i also think it would be nice for a change to have an unbiased opinion on accessories regardless of the manufacturer and their contributions to this website.

I do support the cause and need for constant positive reviews of the formentioned products who contribute to this community. But as an experienced professional DVX100 user for many years, I would like to add my personal opinion to my experience with other brand-name products without it hopefully getting deleted.

I personally like the quality of the Litepanels On Camera lights, the NRG Varilux light, and the Sony 10/20watt on-camera light to use with the DVX100. I'm sure the Vidled light is great but it doesnt look or seem to have the quality of the others i have mentioned. I also have found that generic non-brandname batteries for the Panasonic DVX100 to be very useful and immediately available without any waiting or backordering unlike other supported battery brands.. And they are only a fraction of the price and still have the same Power output and last me more than enough for a days worth shooting. I don't mean to sound rash.. but I do feel that there are a lot of excellent products that are not mentioned on this message board that deserve more credit. And everytime a "newbie" on this messageboard asks for a recommendation for batteries or lights for their camera only a couple of products are mentioned.

That is just my opinion.. No big deal. Go ahead and delete this form of self-expression from myself.. it won't be the first time it has happened.. FIGHT THE POWER!

i recently ordered and recieved my VIDLED and i'm really happy with it. Not only does the Panasonic battery power it (with optional power pack) but it looks professional and allows me to attach my RODE NTG-1 shotgun mic + shockmount onto of the light itself which helps.

for a sample of work with and without the light:

My first video was shot without the light

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEbh3v_oMKQ

my second video was shot with it, it gave me a lot more room to work with the lighting and get the shots i needed with a decent shutter speed, notice the first movie is grainy at times or dark (all the time?)

it helps and trust me i don't work for them at all.

Can you post some video that shows a difference, that isn't a very good example. Maybe its just because its on youtube but it doesn't look that much better.

Thanks

you can find more test-like footage on the VIDLED site. Trust me the second video wouldn't be there without the light.

I am looking into the VidLed light and was wondering which one you bought? They have three models, which are dimmable and they are all the same price.

is you can afford £200 ($300)
look at the PAG c6 kit.
i got one 2 weeks ago, it's great.
I've been using PAG toplight's for the last 17 years
they are bulletproof

Check out the Varizoom on camera LED light:

http://www.varizoom.com/products/batteries/s2010_series.html

It has a 40W output and is nice and compact. It also uses the same batteries your DVX uses. Daylight balanced, tungsten filter and diffusion built in, barn doors, fully dimmable... need I go on? Oh yeah, and it's cheaper than the Vidled (which quite honestly doesn't even look as cool).

I got your back Biz. People should know all the options.

Hey kids, sorry to come so late to this discussion, but we are all about choices here...
check out this "low cost" on camera LED light from Batteries4broadcast which takes the Panasonic (or Canon, or Sony) battery.

http://www.batteries4broadcast.com/lb105.htm

I have a friend who is has the VIDLED, and it's nice and it does the job. I believe he is very satisfied.

Of course there is the Litepanel, which you can also use with an adapter plate to take your style of battery (ie. panasonic, sony etc.) or use their proprietary battery which is very low profile. THese are very nice lights with lots-o-punch.

Please note that the Litepanel takes and requires two Panasonic or Sony or whatever type of batteries to run it from the adapter plate. Litepanel kits can be viewed at B&H or go the Able CIne.
Cheers, Ray

Kinda of on the same subject... I am looking at going overseas for a short shoot. I will not be taking my complete light kit. I was thinking of taking one of the on camera lights that we have talked about here and maybe on other light. Any suggestions?

Also, I thought about getting something like the litepanel on camera light and use it as my other light too. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

I use this light for work and my only complaint is the size of the battery vs how long you can run it for.

Im thinking about buying a vidled now.

I use a Frezzi Mini Fill, and wouldn't trade it for anything. The battery is big and kind of a pain, but it's fully worth the trouble.

Vidled

Vidled

I went through this as well. The standard in our market seems to be the Litepanel. I rented this for a job and was really dissapointed. At over a grand it is way overrated.
I settled on the VIDLED Cool light-8000K. It has insane output even when gelled and color corrected and the batteries screw to the top if the light. On set when I turn it on people are shocked at the throw.
I'm very happy and for the same money I'd spend on Litepanel I can buy 2 VIDLED's and extra chargers and batteries. The lack of barndoors is a drag, but that's a minor complaint. The guy Marius is also very nice and has provided excellent service.

I just ordered the VIDLED cool LED. I got the black instead of stock white. Im going to use a DVX battery to power it. I hope I made the right choice. I have been back and forth between this the varizoom. I'll let you know how it goes.

We have 2 Vidled lights. 3200k and 5600k. They are both excellent. The daylight Vid is the way to go since it puts out the most light. I gel it if needing 3200k. You cant beat the price and its built like a ROCK!
