On Camera Lighting - Need Input!

Hi;

I'm looking to get an on camera light kit (I know they are not ideal) - I need it for run and gun situation, news interviews and stuff.

I'm looking at these two kits, based on recommendations from teh B&H folks:

Frezzolini MFK-XL1K :

Bescor AK12ATM:

I'm trying to keep it cheap - anyone used these, and have feedback, or any other suggestions.

Thanks!

Both of those are okay. It'll end up being a question of budget and type of light you want.

Also to consider would be LED lights, as they use less power, so your battery pack can be much smaller/lighter.
Check out Zylight for an amazing light where you can even change color temperature; or Varizoom makes a nice LED light that costs less than the Zylight. And we also make LED lights.

Vidled;

Thanks for the tip - anyone on this board use LEDs, I have no experience at all with them - and am wodnering what the advantages / trade-offs might be?

thanks,

I have a set of VidLed and for some on board fill or just a stop (sometimes a 1/2) indoors is a great choice.
Actually I've been using my VidLed much more than I thought, both on board or not.
Great value!

I have the Frezzi 100W mini-fill with dimmer and I'm extremely happy with it. Go for the 100W if you can - the 50 is iffy. Ha! But still, it ain't no HMI and it can't compete with the sun - but great indoors.

I have the Varizoom which I'm quite impressed with. You just have to remember that it is not a power light, about 40W max. I do like the built-in barn doors, diffuser and 3200K color correction panel.

With the VidLeds - what wattage would these Standard and Deluxe models be comparable to - 50 W or 100 W or something else?

Woudl you consider these for all purpose type lights, run-gun interviews, etc?

Q: What is the light output?

VIDLED A: Probably about a 30W halogen equivalent. But everyone uses different scales, so it's hard to compare really. I had a 50W halogen light, and the VIDLED was brighter than it when color corrected to daylight color temperature. It depends on the light, and who's doing the comparing.

WAFlowers - I see that you have the Verizoom camera light. How bright are they? I was checking them out on the internet. I like the idea that you don't have to carry a battery pack. Lets say your interviewing a band (around 6 people including the reporter) and you are pretty much in a dark area, how far back can you be and still have good light on your subjects? I've used the frenzzi's in the past when I was shooting with a XDCAM. I would like to get something compared to them.

Thanks, Jimmy

i have used nothing but PAG top light's for the last 18 years, on SP SX and XDcam
i now have PAG C6 on my HVX.
and i travel all over the world on News shoots
so there is a lot of running and gunning

could you list some model #'s?

I've been using the new S-2010F On-Camera LED Light from Varizoom for several months now. LED lights, and specifically these, offer many advantages over traditional tungsten lighting…40w output with zero heat emission, on-board diffuser, long battery life without a belt and tether, dimmable with no color shift, 3200K/5600K color temperature, etc, etc. For on-cam use, they compare very favorably to much more expensive kit (cough*litepanels*cough).

Anyway, you can read my full product review of the light kit in the March issue of DV Magazine. The review is also available online at dv.com.
Pricing is very reasonable, B&H has them for under $370.

What do you think of the Lowel i-Light:

It's focusable and has the traditional Lowel practicity behind it. It can up to 100W.

As I am also looking for a camera light, I will have to pick between the Lowel and the Bescor:

The Bescor is smaller in size, has integrated dichroic and dimmer.

Price of both, including barndoors, is about the same. It's a tough decision.
