On Camera light(s) mounted off to the side?

Greetings,
I am interested in seeing pictures of your on camera light set ups, especially for the HVX200. (battery configurations, how you deal with cords, other mounted gear,etc.).
On camera lighting certainly has its place, but I am not a fan of the straight-on, news look lighting. Anyone using a hot shoe extender or other technique to mimic more of a traditional offset key light angle? Anyone try two lights, one on either side of the camera with one brighter than the other for actual fill/key coverage? Think one man crew, run and gun shooting with improved lighting.
Thanks,
Phil

im not sure the small added benefit youd get from side mounting would be worth all the unweildy rigging to make it happen. not for run and gun anyway.
i mean i guess you could rig up some 3 foot wide rack with articulating arms at each end. but may be more a pain (literally) than its worth in a run and gun scenario...

in my experience, if a shoot budget cant afford at least 1 camera assistant, it probably isnt worth getting that worked up about specifics of best light placement anyway...

When I shot news I remember a guy who would throw a lav on his interviewee and shoot from the shoulder while holding his pag light in his left hand arm extended...looked ok, set his stuff apart from the rest.

Totally agreed, last century i used to use a 18 inch rod from the cold shoe to the light, rod was out to L or RHS, and at about 45 degrees, worked ok, but at times did get caught on things.
Lately I used a dimeable , colour adjustable LED from the cold shoe of the HPX172, and same light with an extension bar to sit over the square lens mount of my older Bigger SPX800, works a treat.
Hand held is the cheapest option, so do that till you get sick of it, or the talent waffles on too long and your arm gets very sore.

Try a Frezzi Mini-fill light on a small stand. Or carry a 150w Dedolight and a stand. May need a reflector to fill in some cases.
