Olympus zoom lens question

Hi everyone,

I posted this before in the "Just got my AF100" thread. I apologize for repeating it, but I need advice from someone with knowledge (Barry Wan Kenobi, I am looking in your general direction). I am using an Olympus 4/3 zoom with the Panasonic 4/3 to micro 4/3 adapter. When I go from telephoto to wide there is a somewhat horrific clicking sound that starts about 1/2 way through and continues until full wide. It only happens when the camera is powered up. Bad lens, bad adaptor or bad pairing?

Any advice/answers from anyone on the board would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Haven't experienced that, so I can't answer. Hopefully someone with that particular combination of equipment will weigh in.

Send it back. B&H is great. It should not be clicking. My Zuikos never click. I haven't used them with the adapter yet, so I can't comment on that with certainty.

Horrific clicking? My Oly zooms (14-35, 35-100 f/2) make clicking sounds when the iris is changing but that is considered normal. If you have lens set to auto iris it could make a lot of clicking sounds as you are zooming because your lens probably has a variable max. f/stop and it is changing as you zoom. I think the only silent zoom lens is the Lumix 14-140.
Set your camera to manual iris and slowly rotate your iris knob and you should hear a click for each change of f stop and see in your EVF/LCD the changing f stop value.

What lens is it?

I'm running an Olympus Zuiko 14-54 f/2.8-3.5 Mk II on the Panasonic DMW-MA1 adapter. If i'm shooting wide open at full zoom (f/3.5) and zoom out, the lens clicks as the variable aperture opens up (to f/2.8).

It only happens when I'm zooming out - there is no clicking when I zoom in, even though the lens is losing 2/3rds of a stop

Thanks for the knowledge, everyone. I knew that it had something to do with the aperture, but I was concerned because the clicks only happened in one direction. Oh, and thanks again Barry and Panasonic, my book shipped today!
