Olympus MMF-1 & Panasonic DMW-MA1 adapters for GH1

I have a GH1 and I want to use a Samyang 8mm (nikon mount) & an Olympus 9-18mm.

Question 1: Are the Olympus MMF-1 & Panasonic DMW-MA1 adapters the same and just different makes? Do they do the same thing: 4/3 lens to micro 4/3 lens?

Question 2: If I buy the Panasonic DMW-MA1 will this work for both lenses?

Question 3: Why is the DMW-MA1 so expensive at £100 and what is the difference between this and a £25 nikon adapter as seen here > http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220681610961

Many thanks in advance.

1: Yes, they are both functionally identical.

2: Yes, as above.

3: DMW-MA1 is for 4/3 to M4/3 mount and it enables AF. That is a third party Nikon to M4/3 mount, AF not included.

That's great! All the information i needed without trailing through 100s of websites... thank you Ray

Just to clarify. The Samyang in Nikon mount won't work with the DMW-MA1, unless you use a Nikon to 4/3 adapter in the mix.

So having a Nikon-4/3 adapter and a DMW-MA1 adapter how much is this going to effect the lens in the way of being a 8mm fisheye ? Would this make the distance between the lens and the camera quite a lot? :/

The distance isn't changed, as the adapter is basically a spacer with the right fitting. You could get a Nikon to M4/3 adapter and bypass the DMW-MA1. But I think the distance from lens to sensor, will be more or less the same either way.
Here is a thread on using one with a Pen, so will give you some idea how it looks. Check the hardware threads too.

Thanks Adrian.

Surely using 2 adapters makes the distance from lens to sensor greater? Or do these 2 adapters together work out same mm as the Nikon to M4/3 adapter?

Is this the correct one as in my origianl post? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=220681610961 ?

What about if I had bought the Olympus mount version of the Samyang 8mm, would I then be able to use the DMW-A1 alone? This would then be useful as I could use the DMW-A1 with both Samyang 8mmm and Olymups 9-18mm without the aditional adapter when using the Samyang?

If you've got no need for the Nikon mount, then this is the way to go.

The mechanical adapters just give the correct spacing to the sensor, so a Nikon to 4/3 mount added to a 4/3 - m4/3 adapter 'should' be the same distance wise, as a direct Nikon to m4/3 adapter.

Sorry still trying to get this straight in my head... So if I used a 'Nikon to 4/3 adapter in the mix' with the DMW-A1 then the AF function of the DMW-A1 stops working and therefore now fuctions the same as the cheap alternative: 'Nikon to Micro 4/3 adapter'

Does anyone know if i use a 'Nikon to 4/3 adapter' together with the 'DMW-A1 adapter' will the DMW-A1 still be fully functional ie with AF working? Or when using the 'Nikon to 4/3 adapter' does this break the electrical connection to the DMW-A1?

The critical aspect of an m43 adapter is how accurately it is machined to produce correct focus at infinity. I've used a half dozen m43 adapters, and the most expensive one had the worst focus at infinity. Using two adapters in series is a toss up - the focus errors could just as easily add together as cancel out.

I bought a Samyang fisheye for my GH1 with an adapter.... it was not the DMW MA1 but a cheaper version.... this adapter was really bad in the way that the fisheye was constantly out of focus...

I ended up selling the Samyang and getting a Peleng. I still went for a cheaper adapter than the DMW MA1 but this combination seems to work just great.

I've seen some footage of the Samyang with a DMW MA1 and it looks great.... so maybe it might be worth going for the DMW MA1 just to be sure.

With the two lenses you have listed you will need two adapters. A Four Thirds to Micro Four Thirds adapter and a Nikon to Micro Four Thirds adapter.
The Nikon adapter would be used by itself. It would be complete mechanical adapter and would not have any automatic functions whatsoever.
Seperate from this is the adapter for Four Thirds. This adapter allows for automatic functions to pass through to the lens.
The two adapters function on their own and do not need the other to work as they will both adapt to Micro Four Thirds independently.

Hope this helps you understand.
