Olympus 50-200

Any reason why this lens wouldn't work with proper adapter?
Haven't heard much talk about it. Decent speed, price and range.
Thoughts?

Interesting, hadn't even seen that one mentioned.

Only problem I'd foresee is that none of the Olympus lenses have any form of image stabilization. While that's no big deal in the 14-35, I can't imagine that lens would be all that useful at 200mm without some OIS. Other than that, yeah... fast, reasonable price, and a nice long tele range.

Thank you sir. I shoot mostly eng style off sticks 80% of the time. I'll give it a try soon...happy new year

I have this lens. Love it.

Excellent price point, fast, great range--just like Barry says.

Very quiet, it's SWD. One thing to note is the physical length, it's as long as the 35-100mm and extends out a bit for telephoto.

I will put up some footage as soon as my AF100 arrives... during the next few days, I hope.

I am planning on buying this lens along with the Zuiko 14-35 SWD lens and ignore the gap between 35-50. I would like to use the 35-100 but I won't be able to use a follow focus with it because of the fly-by-wire focus barrel, so it won't really work out.

I just want to confirm for sure that the SWD lenses will be usable with a follow focus.

Can I use a follow focus, like the Shoot35 CINEfocus Follow Focus r2 Unit, with the Olympus 14-35, 12-60, and 50-200 SWD lenses and have precise, repeatable focus pulls based on the marks I make with a grease pencil?

Thanks in advance,
-Chris

I purchased the Olympus 14-54 f/2.8-3.5 - it works well with the Panasonic DMW-MA1 adapter

I thought the focus ring was mechanical, but it is indeed electronic. In other words, when the lens isn't being powered the focus ring doesn't do anything. It isn't mechanical.

I can't remember if the Zuiko 14-35 was the same way...for some reason I feel it had a mechanical focus ring. Someone else please chime in on that.

It kind of bummed me out. I plan on using that lens for more run'n'gun stuff anyway, but the option to use a follow focus for repeatable pulls would've been nice

Zuiko 14-35 SHG is mechanical (SWD) while 35-100 SHG is electronic (non-SWD).
BTW the HG 12-60 (SWD) has mechanical focus too. So does the newer HG 50-200 (SWD).

If the olympus lens has an SWD motor then it's mechanically linked, otherwise it isn't. The lenses that have SWD are 12-60, 50-200 (new version) and the 14-35.

Edit: Redundant... too slow

My plan as of now is to buy the AF100 with the Zuiko 14-35 SWD and 50-200 SWD use with manual follow focus (shoot35 CINEfocus unit), the Zuiko 35-100 Non-SWD use with the Manfrotto 521pfi rack focus controller.

So two things to confirm before buying all this:

1. Can the SWD lenses like the 14-35 REALLY be used with a follow focus for PRECISE exact focus pulls? I know that the focus barrel is mechanically connected and can be used with a follow focus BUT maybe it's got a little bit of play, and isn't completely accurate or is in some way not going to work perfectly with a follow focus? Can anybody confirm this?

2. Can the 521pfi focus controller definitely set two focus "hard stops" and rack between them smoothly using the Zuiko 35-100 f/2 and other SWD lenses? I hope so, but since these are 3rd party non-video focus 4/3 lenses I'm afraid there will be some issue.

If both 1 and 2 are true then I'm gonna be a super-set with 14-100 covered at f/2 and 100-200 covered at f/3.5 with with ability to rack focus throughout the whole range AND autofocus when I need it in a live situation. Sounds great!!!

1.THEORETICALLY it should work. Accuracy of SWD focussinig is 5 micron, the focussing ring turn of the 14-35 is really big for stills lens; ca 180 degrees. But before I test myself, I can only say "I hope".
2. Supposedly "yes" based on third party reports. For "truth" see the caveat above.

There are pro wireless solutions like Chrosziel Alladin which can callibrate the whole system for pinpoint accuracy. Very expensive (but not more so than eg. Arri mechanical systems)

In reference to Zuiko SWD 14-35mm & SWD 50-200mm, they are both varifocal, not parfocal. But I have used them successfully for repeatable focus pulls, and don't really see any problem in that regard. They are awesome lenses. Neither is OIS, so at the tele end of the 50-200mm you might have some difficulty.

As soon as my AF100 arrives I post some footy.
