Olympus 35-100 Lens problem, users please chime in!

My 35-100 won't communication with my AF100 AT ALL. The camera won't even give me any lens info. In addition, the manual focus doesn't work. It just turns and turns with no effect. Am I missing something here?

check if your lens setting is not "off" (turns off communications with manual lenses)

When I turn it OFF, I finally see image, but when it's ON there's no communications at all. The manual focus on the lens doesn't work either. I think I have a bum-lens.

35-100 (unlike 14-35) is a non-SWD lens and the focus is by-wire. It will not work if there is no comms with the body. A faulty adapter perhaps? Try to wiggle it in LENS CHECK ON position. Do you have any other 4/3 lens to check the adapter? Does the camera work with any other lenses?

nugat, thanks for the insight. I tried wiggling the adapter around a bit to no avail. I am not disputing what you are saying, but I find it hard to believe that manual focus would rely on a wire connection of some sort...if so, maybe it's not the lens for me.
Unfortunately, it is the only lens I have for the camera as of today. I have a load of other lenses, but none are 4/3 and I don't have any additional adapters.

I just got the AF100 and the lens and haven't been able to shoot a THING. I feel like I'm in a round room trying to pee in the corner! ;-)

"by-wire" is shorthand for the lack of mechanical coupling (gearing). The focussing ring sends info to the camera body what you want to do and the body controls the lens via the electronic contacts. Obviously there is some problem with the communications, but it's very unlikely the lens is the culprit. If the camera works with other lenses you have, it must be the adapter.
Make sure your AUTO-FOCUS switch is in the M-manual position. Can't think of anything else...

Which adapter are you using? I heard of some issues with the Olympus 4/3-m4/3 adapter. I am using the Panasonic one and it works fine with that lens.

I can't make any progress at all without another camera and/or lens and no one local seems to have Lumix stuff. I guess I'll have to buy another adapter (which is Panasonic) to reduce the possibility of that.
Edit: I found a GH2 with a lens. Here goes another $1K

How did you update the firmware? It's kinda maddening...the firmware says you have to do it on a Panasonic camera. However, how can you do it if the camera doesn't recognize the lens at all?

UPDATE: I put the lens on an Olympus camera (E-620) and it works great. I've confirmed it's 1.1 firmware

Put it on the AF100, no dice.
Put in on a GH2, no dice. Both report that there's no lens attached.

Downloaded the 1.2 firmware following the instructions and when I hit PLAY (per the firmware step 3), again it just complains about no lens being there.

The instructions also say that this firmware must be installed on Panasonic Camera and not Olympus.

I don't see a way out? Anyone?

You need to put the lens on a Panny body that sees it (eg GH1 +adapter) and update the firmware.
Check that 1.2 version is there before switching to AF100.

Same thing happened to me!! I had it on a GH2 and the AF100 and it would not work with either. I had to go to a camera shop who had an Olympus PEN and was kind enough to let me upgrade the lens from their camera. After that it works fine.

sorry, mix up

Of course you need to put it on an Olympus body.
Sorry for the mix up.

Fixed...thanks for the help. I am gonna write-up a detailed explanation of this. Hopefully it will save someone else from the same vortex of pain that I experienced! ;-)

This is my next lens, so any direction would be appreciated not only by me I'm sure.

Hello LeavingTheCandy,

I bought a 35-100 in the autumn (serial number 170003833) and had exactly the same problem you describe non-communication with AF101 body. I had to send it back to Olympus for repair. Check the serial number on yours; do we share a duff batch? It's now been returned by Olympus, but the focus is noisy. (I have a 14-35 Zuiko as well whose focus is quiet.) I'm on firmware 1.1 and I'm mighty curious to know if firmware 1.2 would reduce focus-noise!! UPDATE: Olympus Europe emailed me 8th feb: "A firmware update will not help [ with the noisy focus ]"

You MUST have 1.2 firmware for it to communicate with Panasonic cameras. You also MUST update the firmware on an Olympus camera and NOT a Panasonic as the firmware update instructions suggest. Hope this helps...I will write a detailed instruction asap.

I'd like to also clarify that this issue has NOTHING to do with grinding or any mechanical issues as some have asked through PM.

You also need the latest firmware update available for the AF 100 [v1.14] to update any lens firmware I believe

I just bought this lens for the AG-AF100 and have read great things, but I too cannot use it because the lens firmware is 1.1. According to the prior posts, the lens needs to be version 1.2 for the AG-AF100 to recognize it. I have the latest firmware for the camera - version 1.14 - and that is not solving the problem. I don't own any Olympus cameras, so I will be bouncing around town tomorrow begging a local dealer to let me mount the lens on an appropriate Olympus 4/3 camera and connect the camera online via USB for the Olympus upgrade process. What a pain. I hope the camera's version 1.15 fixes this!

I just picked up the Olympus 35-100 to go with my 14-35. I plugged it into the AF100 fired it up and it worked perfectly. Full control and display functions (just no auto focus). The newer lenses must come loaded with the latest firmware as I was worried I would run into the same problem others are having.
