Olympic National Park

Ryan,

The sun through the trees was a happy accident that happened just before the sun set. We were driving away from Hurricane Ridge and slammed on the breaks when we saw that sight. I didn't do anything special for that shot only to decide to make the trees more of a silhouette so that the sunlight didn't blow out the shot. I kept my eye on the zebras to make sure I was getting what I wanted.

For the skyline, I shot 30p. 24p just wasn't cutting it. I believe the shutter was set at 1/24th but I can't remember exactly. I boosted it slightly in post but, for the most part, the camera did the work.

My shooting ratio varies quite a bit. For instance, if I go somewhere for a weekend where I know my time is limited, then my shooting ratio is much less and I spend a lot more time really planning my shots...this trip was a good example...my mind was working overtime to get good shots rather than just a lot of footage and then hoping for the best.

On Pine Lake, it's a different situation. I tend to shoot over months, accumulating footage, good and bad, and then choose the "best of" to create these films. I usually don't like to be locked into getting specific shots, preferring to be surprised by what Mother Nature brings. When I get to the point of editing, that's when I notice holes that need to be filled and I have a much stronger sense of exact shots I need to complete the edit.

Hope that answers your questions.

Once again, beautiful and motivating. I realize I have all the ingredients that you have but I have just been letting them sit around. You work motivates me to attempt to create something from them. I might not cook as well, but I should at least make an attempt.

D.O.C's a tough date.

Looked great, dijsjecta, as per norm.

I liked the transition back to Seattle at night when the music changed to the John Williamsesque pizzacato. Different world = different orchestral voicing.

Showed Brackendale to my girlfriend to cheer her up (you know ... nature and stuff) when she was having a bad day yesterday.

Ok, it's official:
D.O.C. = D.I.C.K.

If you don't have something constructive to say then shut the **** up.

Constructive doesn't mean positive necessarily -- it means you explain why whatever bug is up your overly succinct ass.

And what you are doing is different than someone who just writes the almost as succinct "cool" or "loved it", those comments might not be particularly helpful, but they translate into either "I really liked that and don't have time to say more / how I would I begin to critique all that was good about that" or "I'm not feeling overly analytical, but there were definitely things I liked about that and I'm out here and I hear you brother."

Even an unsupported "that sucked" would be better than your one finger evaluations. Though I'd still think you were a dick, if you are going to be critical it's only polite to be constructive.

From the drool you spit in the Gerry thread one would think you had some sort of liberal arts or fine arts education or background, and would know how to critique a colleague's work from your experience. Colleagues are exactly what we are here though experience varies greatly. We are part of a community and the varied experience is one of the great things about it, because the newbies can get feedback from people like the Barries, disjecta, and all, and they can get a fresh perspective on things and be reminded why they got it in to this.

But B+, C, C-, THAT'S JUST A BIG ****ING WASTE OF EVERYONE'S TIME. I don't think you are too stupid or are so inarticulate as to be unable to support your opinion. So that leaves me with one alternative -- you are an inconsiderate dick with no respect for how long it takes, the effort involved in, and the personal feelings people have for their hard work. You must just be trying to build your member status with these one letter posts.

So again, if you can't look at these things in the spirit of community, and waste your oh so precious time with at least a few sentences as to what could be improved and perhaps how it could be achieved, then stay the **** off our block.

This is a forum where we HELP each other out. Not try to make our selves feel superior by glibly stamping the work of others with letter grades.

D.O.C. (Otherwise known as Death of Coltrain I am imagining) is Gone Like Braun.

As is Coltrain (his other moniker)

This is an indivual who claims to believe and live through God and Christianity by the way; not only carrying signatures of scriptures but proclaiming to want to create art that is spiritual)

He has failed to get along with anyone on this board, has gone out of his way to criticize others works in the rudest way possible and has generally decided he is unwilling to be a part of this community.

I had enough. He's gone.

Bye bye. Coltrain (D.O.C.)

Hope that answers your questions.

Steven,

Yep that answers them perfectly. Thanks for the input. I'm continually impressed by the scenes you are able to capture. Besides the well framed and exposed composition, you seem to have a nack for capturing the animals while they are doing something interesting.

Apology to Disjecta

Apology to Disjecta

Sorry ranted on D.O.C. with such magnum force on your thread.

(I did enjoy it, however).

This sort of thing has happened twice on your thread and I hate it because it takes away from the craft, passion and descipline that you bring so effectively together in your work.

I think this happens because people are threatened by the quality fo what you do, which in a way is a compliment -- sort of.

(EDIT 8/5 (later): OH ... reread posts -- Coltraine was the Dude that thought disjecta was good just because of location -- so I guess it's just one guy.)

But at anyrate - I hope a lot more folks will look at this clip and give you the kudos you desrerve or take adavantage of your mojo with questions.

I wish I was in Seattle still I would offer some internship hours and gear caddying in hopes that the mojo might wear off.

Let me know if you ever offer those master classes you mentioned in your FAQ; I still have peeps in that area.

Again.
Good work.
Good Eye.
Good shooting.
Good post.
Good compression.
Excellent conveyance of beauty in what we know is beautiful but forget about as well as the stuff we never looked twice at.

I second that. I erased the post i nquestion.

Nutcases tend to keep coming back even after you tell them to go home. It's weird. Someone tell's me to get the hell out of here and I'm leaving.

Anyway; I too am sorry that the ass-money keeps shitting on your thread.

Disjecta rocks.

Loved the film. The images were simply stunning.

If you find some time, would you mind relaying some of the technical settings and aspects that you used to capture those incredible images...?

Thannks,
Prof. D.

Disjecta, once again you motivate me to make a stunning film. I'm jealous, but with the highest respect to you ever! You're definitely talented....

One question:

While shooting in squeeze mode, did you ever think about having lost pixels in your final product? The final film did look great, but when you shot, did you worry about loss of any pixels or resolution?

Thanks,
Justin

Justin,

Progressive scan footage in squeeze mode is still hugely better looking than full res interlaced footage in my opinion so I didn't worry about it.

ProfD, check out my FAQ page on my site (in my sig file) for those kind of details.

Thanks for the comments.
