F55: OLED or LCD Viewfinder?

I haven't had a chance to see the F55 in the flesh, but what are perspective purchasers preferring in the choice of VF? Is the OLED too small despite it's nice picture? Or is the traditional LCD more practical with the flip-up and size?

The perceived size of the image is about the same in both. The OLED uses magnifying optics to make things look like they always have. It's not a small image. By same token, it's not too large either, like some cheap EVFs have been trending.

I've also had my eye to both, as recently as two days ago. The LCD version is pretty much equivalent to an Alphatron. It's pretty dang good.

The OLED is as good as EVFs get, pretty much, and that's including comparing it to the Red OLED Bomb, and the Alexa's 1280x720 LCOS.

I decided to spring the extra $1300 and get the OLED. If the LCD was around $2500 or less, it would have been a more difficult choice.

Hmmm.... sounds like the OLED is more preferred. I'm using the new Cineroid Retina which I could get away at a pinch to start with, but the lack of on-screen menus could be a problem.

0.7" for EL-100 LCD VF?!?! What am I missing here? How do you use a .7" VF?? (especially for 4k)

You are missing the inclusion of optics in the eyepiece that magnify it to correct viewing size. Good optics, not the crap they put in Zacutos and Cineroids.

This is the same way the Alexa and Red EVFs work. You'd never guess/know the panel was .7 unless they told you.

The finder is, quite literally, state of the art, with the possible exception of the Red Bomb OLED which they have had black level issues with.

Hmmm.... sounds like the OLED is more preferred.

You Aussies have a way with understatement :-)

If needed, you can also use these cameras without buying the viewfinders. In testing (hopefully next week or right after) I'll only be using a TVLogic on the "sub" SDI output on an F55.

And the LCD VF screen size is really small when the optics are flipped up so you'd still need a 5.6 or 7" unit for a monitor.

As long as character display (Super) output is possible.

I just don't shoot looking through VF's, so its not so much a matter of money for me, but if the OLED is native 3.5" then I can use it as LCD. Sort of.

aha. yes. The OLED is indeed a "view finder". Only with your eye to it. Like they used to be.

For $1100 you can get a SmallHD AC7 OLED 7". Same resolution as OLED finder. Prob way to your taste, I'd imagine it's fantastic.

Having had a go with both, I agree the OLED VF is very nice, but the flexibility of the LCD won it for me. I quite often like to step back from a VF and the flip sideways is also very useful in tight spaces... and as far as LCD screens go, this new Sony is one of the best I've seen.

Though choice. had a look at the LCD version last week , no Oled at the Sony presentation.
LCD looked very good, and it allows easier menu view and playback.
especially good playback view when in small hand held mode is nice to have.
I was aiming for the Oled but now I'm in doubt.
Of topic, but they showed the new Vocas F55 base plate.
Very good, very light. rods at the back and cheaper then Sony!
