Old Sacramento

Alright I haven’t had any projects to work on lately, but I did have some footage that I was contracted to get of Sacramento a month ago, so I thought I'd put it together for you. For it's purpose it was to go to rock music, but that's not really my forte with scenic shots however I did run out of good scenic (to the music) footage toward the last half of the vid so in my opinion it's somewhat sloppy, but I am restless to bring you guys something this week so here you go:)

You have plenty of nice location around you, just go out and lucky you are, it is not too cold in your region. :)

Nice video, I like the shot of the man on a bench. Looking for more shootages in a next future.

Thanks guys as always! Glad you guys like Sac come and visit sometime! And you Shadow, you live in montreal! Frikin Look!

Your trippin if you think you don't have good stuff to film!!

Having grown up and lived in Sacramento most of my life I really enjoyed this. It's always interesting to see a familiar place through someone else's eyes.

That ziggurat (pyramid shaped building) that sits on the river was originally the Money Store (before they went out of business). I worked there on the top floor, my desk sat against a window looking out over Old Sacramento. I sure miss that view :)

Nice work and well put together piece. I felt the zooms were a bit too heavy handed, a slower more steady speed might have been more in keeping with the overall tone. The music was perfectly suited and really added to the work.

Could I ask about your transitions. Were you using a fade to black on the early transitions... (how many frames was the transition)? Also, what editing software are you using?

Thanks rcapra. Yes those were fade to blacks I cannot open the file to tell you how many frames they were I did'nt even look when editing it I just did it till they "felt right" I used the same effect in a completely different way toward the end in my short, Worst Case Scenario which you can view at http://www.oasisdesignstudios.com/WCS.htm as for my editor/NLE I use Vegas 5 which is a really nice program to learn on when just getting into editing. I picked it up very quickly. As for the zooms, when filming, I knew my client wanted to use them to rock music so I thought hard fast zooms would be more suiting. Hope this helps you!

Matt,

Nice work. I definitely would stay away from the zooms. Pick a long shot and then a shot at full zoom and fade them together as a gradual change in perspective, this keeps the home video feel at bay.

You've got some nice compositions there but it feels like it's held together a little loosely with the edit. The music you chose is difficult to edit to because it lacks any kind of dynamic range. My preference is to find more dynamic music and then really work the edit with it.

One more thing, try to stay clear of lens flares. Sometimes they work but mostly they don't.

Keep up the good work.

I liked the flares and the zooms. I may have even done the zooms a little faster, but then again, I enjoy Wes Anderson movies, so perhaps I've been "trained" in that regard. Some of the shots were unnecessarily overexposed for my taste. I like bloomed highlights in a purposeful aesthetic execution, but the shot of the couple walking up the ramp really hits me the wrong way. Every shot of the bridge or the sky or water would be better served at a faster speed or shot time lapse (intervalometer) for visual interest.. May be a little more interesting visually that way.

Overall, I enjoyed it. You've made Sacramento look like a nice place to visit. Nice work.

Hey Avatuar,

I'm filming my first feature (Vigilantes - action/comedy) in Sacto as we speak. I've tried to contact you before, but the offer still stands for us to possibly work together. I've got alot of great talent working on the project (world champion martial-artist, a couple of local dj's, even the west sac police department is letting us use their building and officers) so I could use another trained eye.

liked the lens flare shot...
liked the music...
disliked the quick flashes of black between edits...
the first nighttime shot of the bridge that you zoom in on should have been on sticks...too shaky...

You got me in the mood to create the same kinda video here in Vegas.
Going to D.C. tomorrow for business so I'll have to start on that later this week when I return.

Like avatuar, I'd like to extend an invite to anyone wanting to work on a film project in the Sacramento area...

Happy shooting to all
