old camera as playback device?

Hi -- I just got a DVX100b. I hear it's best to save wear and tear on the DVX by using another camera as a playback device. I don't have another miniDV camera, but I do have an old Sony Digital-8. So I'm thinking of dubbing the DVX footage onto that, then using it to play, rewind, find the best takes, etc.

My question is, if I dub the entire DVX tape onto my old camera, do I lose quality because the old camera is less sensitive? Or does all the image detail get transferred, because it's recording digitally?

any advice appreciated.

thanks!

Throw the digital-8 out or sell it on ebay for peanuts. Get yourself a cheap MiniDV that can be used as a transfer deck (preferably new). This will save on the DVX's hour meter and heads. Only use the DVX to record. I know that when my DVX heads give out someday, I should still be okay if I capture live to a notebook, till then I'll be happy using tape.

SD to me, will still be around in some form and outlast my DVX's heads. I just hope head wear will be the first thing to go on my DVX and not something else! I've only got 70 hours on it so far. I'm the type that likes to hold onto my toys. Someday the DVX will be "vintage", isn't that a nice idea. I know some people here are so nuts for HD that it is already vintage, but I prefer a nice softer 24p look (for the naysayers. I've got an HV20 on pre-order for when I'm not in a soft mood).

Really, get a cheap MiniDV to transfer your tapes, don't bother with the digital-8 (been vintage for some time now).

Just wanted to echo Artscroll..... Lose the Digital-8.

I managed to find a great Sony miniDV camcorder for under $100 on eBay. I was a little skeptical at first but it runs great! It's actually not that bad a of a camcorder by itself (for $110).... 2 batteries, charger. As a deck, it shuttles fine and has good tape transport.
