My business partner is selling one of his mics. It is in good shape and has the cardioid cap and a hyper cap with the -10db pad and a foam cover. He will ship it for $150.

Warning! Do Not Buy From This Seller!

I received the "Oktava" a few days ago. I had asked the seller, Chris Rognan, for a tracking number and status, but never received replies.

Upon first opening the Oktava, I noticed that it was severely damaged, not by shipping. The outer metallic case of the microphone was severely bent, as if it had been hit repeatedly against something hard.

Then I noticed several other markings on the mic, markings that are indicative of it being a fake.

I immediately notified Chris that I wished to return the mic, and received no response. I filed a claim with PayPal, and received this answer:

Dear Gavin Garrison,

Your seller has chosen to escalate this dispute to a PayPal claim. By
ending communication with you and escalating to a claim, the seller is
asking PayPal to investigate the case and decide the outcome. As part of
our investigation, PayPal reviewed any communication you may have had in
the Resolution Center.

Our investigation into your claim is complete. As stated in our User
Agreement, the claims process only applies to the shipment of goods. It
does not apply to complaints about the attributes or quality of goods
received. Therefore, we are unable to reverse this transaction or issue a
refund.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER! I had thought that since he was a senior member, things would be OK. Guess not.

Thank you very much for screwing me over, Chris. Why do people do this to each other? Does $150 really warrant alienation from this board? Why would you do this to me? Seriously. Indy filmmaking is already challenging, equipment is expensive. Students like me look to this board in hopes to find quality used equipment. Now I'm out $150, have a worthless knockoff, and little left to do, other than to file a civil action. Unbelievable.

Hey man, I just checked my email today and I got a Paypal claim against me.

I checked out what the claim was about and apparently the mic isn't what you desired. I sold if for my business partner and he gave me all of the specs on it. I know it works perfectly, because I had him hook it up to his camcorder to check it out.

There was a little ding on the mic cap, but nothing that hampers performance in any way. It wasn't sold as a pristine "New" mic, but for the price it is a great deal. Every time that we used it for production it had a windscreen on it, so it wasn't noticeable physically, and the sound always came out as clean as desired for our shooting.

Give the mic a few tests and let me know how it sounds. I know I was blown away with it when my buddy first used it. He used it for over a year with no problems at all.

I just feel like you jumped the gun before I could even resolve anything with you. I barely got to my email this afternoon, but before I even hear anything from you, I get a Paypal Claim, and yet you only probably received the mic yesterday. Take a breath.

I don't take my senior status at DVXUSER lightly. I feel honored to be a part of this group of filmmakers, and the last thing I would do is to harm them. I was selling this mic for my old business partner, and I wont let a petty issue be a significant problem for both of us. I will look into the matter further

I am sorry for the problems just give me a minute to try and rectify things, I am a very busy guy, but yet I take this issue seriously.

hey magic and gavin. looks like you guys have things worked out. thats great to hear! i hate when deals go wrong here. it just make sthings bad for everyone.

but it seems this kind of miscommunication is happening a good bit here on the forum lately.

in my experience in several high dollar gear transactions both on ebay and here, its a general courtesy for both the seller and buyer to be readily communicative. especially here, where there is very little (if any) recourse over a deal gone bad.

id advise anyone selling - if you arent going to be readily available by email, phone or the forum - DONT POST the item. wait until your schedule opens up or you get back from your jungle safari. or state in your post "im going on a jungle safari shoot for a week tomorrow so if you buy i wont ship until i return" you have to be conscious that your buyer might need the item in a reasonably timely fashion.

and to those of you buying - if youre hot to get the item soon (even if youre not) dont buy from anyone without sharing a few emails with them to assess both their character and their schedule.

Also, dont expect that if your email isn't replied to within a few hours, it doesn't mean that the seller is a scammer and a deadbeat. People have more going on than just a simple transaction, but their character can be thrashed in just a few simple minutes, because of lack of patience.

Trust is an important intrinsic value, that I deeply respect and admonish in communities like these; and when my perceived character is shown to be blatantly fraudulent over a simple transaction, it makes me really frustrated, and powerless. I have no intention to scam and rip off the community that has supported me for so many years. To do damage to any other filmmaker, is only hurting myself in the long run, and the short run; moreover, to be accused of ripping off for measly $150 is ridiculous, my character and fundamental values worth more than a dollar sign.

I was helping out a friend by selling a microphone for him, and I end up having a heartache of setting things straight with someone who obviously thought I was scamming him. I am sorry for the heartache you went through, and I have done everything possible to make this right for you, and yet my character is still damaged.

I know that this whole thing will pass and people will see pass a simple transaction gone, silly.

Wow.
Just checked this thread out.
Maybe in the future, people could do what I usually do, which is to exchange telephone numbers?
Sounds like this could all have been resolved with a call or two.

JM2c
YMMV, of course.

Cheers
Chris
