Oktava, BBG, K-SSM question

Hi there,

i just got a Rycote BBG (20mm) for my Oktava MK-012. When positioning the Oktava so that its capsule is in the middle of the BBG, there's very little left of the microphone outside of the BBG for any shock mount to hold it. Can anybody tell me what the spacing of the suspension bands is on the K-Tek K-SSM shock mount? I know that some of you use the Oktava + BBG + K-SSM combo, how far does your Oktava reach into the BBG?

Thanks!

The capsule does not need to be in the center of the BBG. It reaches about 1/3 in with the KSSM.

I put my Oktava close to the center of the BBG. At that point the K-SSM can fully grab just the mic... if you plug the XLR connector into the Oktava then you can use a slighly longer mount and have the XLR connector in the rear band.

Another option, that I don't use but will work, is to get an XLR to XLR adapter and make the Oktava longer.

If you get a K-SSM then you can use it w/o any special solutions.

Do you tie the xlr to the pole after it exits the mic (leaving a small bit of slack) with velcro table wraps?

I should get mine tomorrow!

Great that this thread was made, because I was gonna make one regarding the Rycote BBG, ad K-TEK, I can't find these items at the sound-room, where do I purchase them from? I'm also planning on using it outdoors as well, need a windscreen.

you can get the 20mm rycote baby ball gag and the furry jammer at trewaudio.com.

You could also get your kssm (soft bands) shock mount there too and your 12' gitzo carbon fiber boom pole.

I just took a look at the Octava-BBG-KSSM combo; actually when the rubber holders are at the end of Octava the capsule is exactly in the moddle of the BBG. Works perfect!

The K-Tek KSSM is great (and as everybody knows already, I love the company) but if you have a limited budget and want something that will work just as well (if not better as far as isolation goes) for about $70 less the Rode SM-3 is only $50 and has the added benefit of being able to fit in a hot shoe if you HAVE to mount on camera. With the K-Tek you will need to spend more money to make that happen.

It is a tight fit with the Oktava and the BBG but it does fit and works just fine. The bands are extremely good at isolation. It is probably the best bang for the buck.

The K-Tek is sexier if you got the money. But as usual, sex always costs more. But at least with K-Tek, it is great sex.

Anyone tried this?

Blimp, shockmount, and fur for $149.00?

Looks like the grip of the shockmount is a friction-fit, not a screw on. But for the $$, could be a handy starter set for all those people who think they can only afford an on-camera setup.

I received my K-Tek stuff a few days ago (the wired handgrip and the K-SSM with soft bands). The Oktava even reaches a bit past the middle of the BBG. Perfect combination for gathering sound effects in the field. Now if Fostex would only bring out that FR-2 LE machine... I've been waiting for that since last year.

I was wondering if an xlr adapter like this one would impact the quality of the sound. I want to lengthen it a bit so I can make it fit better in a shock mount. http://www.photogitems.com/Sescom_inline_RF_filter_p/4028.htm

I just heard something like the more connections you have you get something like signal fade? Anyway, just trying to make the octava work for me. Thanks!

This is an old thread....

Not sure why you would need to do this if you have the right shock mount. There are several shock mounts that will work just fine with the Oktava, or other small condensors, and a BBG. If you add that connector, it might get a little weird if the rubber bands were split between the mic and the adapter.
