If ebay "power sellers' are selling packages for a few hundred dollars less than dealers AND offer USA warranties, why should i go someplace like evs online which is more expensive....what am i missing here??

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

what are you missing... uh ,.. you do know you just asked if you should spend apx 3000.00 on pro video equipment at a completely undisclosed internet entity which has absolutely no affilitation or garauntee or service from Panasonic or any other manufacturer..right?

if so and your now saying "yeah dummy, i obviously know what i wrote..." then just buy it there and laugh at us cause were dumb for buying it from somewhere reputable.

if your now asking "does it make a difference if i get it from a dealer" i would ask you.. would you rather buy a brand new car from a dealer and get all the comforts and service wiith it.. or from a completely unknown individual via the internet..

if your now saying " this sandwhich tastes like mold".. stop! take the sandwhich out of your mouth.. drop to the floor, and roll to put the nasty flavor out of your mouth.

whatever you do i wish you luck :)

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

There is a lot of discussion of this topic on related threads in the Marketplace/Buying Gear folder.

The advice seems to range from "only buy EVS 'cause that's the way it is..." to "do what you think makes the most sense to you after you have adequately researched your options".

The preponderance of expert opinion at this web site can fairly be characterized as the former slogan, i.e., " buy only from EVS".

Best regards,

dude, dont do it.
do background check on them. i emailed a couple people who bought from those "power sellers" who have like 100's of + comments. ALL of them ended in "i canceled my order cuz he was pushing me to buy accessories, shipping" etc. email some people who left + feedback on the dvx100a. good place to start

only buy from bhphoto& evs and if you have to promax

Some people do recommend EVS only. I recommend either EVS, ProMax, or B&H. They're all quality dealers with superb service, completely reliable and absolutely above-board.

There are reasons to go with an authorized dealer, and a simple search for "gray market" or "grey market" will yield tons of threads on the subject.

But this item on EBAY claims USA warranty and is a power seller.

I understand that the grey market is not desirable -especially for a high ticket item like this, but IF it is a USA warranty, why not? Has anyone here had postiive experiences with Ebay power sellers?

(PS thank you to everyone who has repsonded thus far!)

Okay, let me scream this at the top of my lungs:

USA warranty -- FROM WHO!?!?!?!? WHO IS WARRANTYING IT?

That's the question you have to ask. When you deal with liars and scumbags, you frequently get lied to by scumbags. Read the excellent article just posted here about a guy's trials and tribulations when buying from hotbuyselectronics.com... turns out that the "USA warranty" was NOT the manufacturer's warranty! It was some bogus warranty from the camera store itself -- and a warranty is only as good as the people who stand behind it.

If you ever see something saying "USA Warranty" or "US Warranty", run. The only warranty that means anything is the manufacturer's warranty.

And, while I'm ranting, let me just go ahead and say it: anyone who buys from any seller other than a Panasonic-authorized seller is just being foolish. And with the volumes and volumes that have been written on this subject, to risk their money, their credit card, their time and their sanity dealing with these unauthorized sellers... well, they get what they get.

Put another way: you can do it the right way, or you can "cheat" -- and cheaters frequently get caught. Panasonic only ever sells to authorized dealers. Anyone else claiming to offer new cameras for sale is "cheating", somehow.

Thank you Barry, this is the kind of info I was looking for. With an investment like this, the 'savings' of a few hundred dollars probabl isnt worth it.

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

I agree with Barry that saving a few hundred bucks may be very risky. Definitely take a look at the article that is linked in this link: http://www.dvxuser.com/cgi-bin/DVX2/YaBB.pl?board=market;action=display;num=1086664641

This article is about a guy who bought from a company that ended up trying to rip him off. The company is a big scam! But if you read on you will find out that they also sell stuff on ebay and suspiciously have a positive feedback! Don't completely rely on the feedback, I have heard of people faking feedback, stealing it, and so on.

Also, whatever company you are looking at on ebay, check out their website THEN check out the website's rating on resellerratings.com where you will get a real idea about what the company is up to...

GLAD I STOPPED BY HERE FIRST!!

GLAD I STOPPED BY HERE FIRST!!

I asked a couple of questions to that "power seller" and sure enough:
a. they were dodgy about the warranty
b. they put a deceptive picture - making it look like the shotgun mike was included.

Thanks for everyone's input, you've probably saved me a bundle and some headaches!

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

Good advice here. Especially the shady USA Warranty bit. I always email sellers requesting whether it's a the Original Panasonic Manufacturer USA Warranty.

Whoops. NONE of the emails have ever been answered. Probably because it's a store warranty...

USA Warranty not enough. Be very specific! Even ask if the dealer is an Authorized Panasonic Commercial Product Dealer. The DVX is a commercial division product, not a consumer division product. (That's why I can't get the camera from my fav reseller, OneCall, who I have an account with. Currenty, they can't get commercial division products. Same with advertised Sony PD camcorders--commercial division.)

That all being said I can't imagine why Panasonic isn't offering dealers big time quantity/sales rebates to fatten up their share of the indie/prosumer market--provide dealers a further incentive to lower prices--which appear to be NOT competitive since they're conveniently stuck at the 3395-3495 level. OOOOOHHHH 13-15% off! Don't do me any favors. Obviously Canon is coming up with something to regain market share...since the XL2/GL2 has totally petered out via rebates. I doubt they can much outdo the DVX at this stage. Panasonic has some momentum here--especially after so many years of being a third place non-player in this market. $3495 not competitive price--it's more or less what we're stuck with since there is so little competition and so much collusion. No camera that hits the market is worth more than 80% of list price via internet. Period. Competitive would be 75-80% based on reputation and how much business one does with the dealer. (They DO keep track.)

Look around but ask the right questions when the price is so low. Saves lots of aggravation. BH, ProMax, EVS, Able, good bets...just not real competitive with one another. Probably because it's a commercial division product and not all Panasonic dealers are alike.

Good Luck!

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

Here is what I posted twice on other parts of this website regarding the DVX, gray market dealers, and electronic purchasing in general.

Guys...it is so easy!  With professional video gear and consumer for that matter, you cannot by any means get a "good deal".  There is a standard price set for individual pieces of equipment.  There are no "good deals".  You cannot by any means - cannot - get 500 dollars off the list price for the camera. 300 dollars for that matter. It just wont happen.  If you want a good deal go to circuit city and look at some of the consumer cameras for 200 bucks...seriously...can't people get over this...i am tired of this same question!!!! THE DVX IS RELATIVELY EXPENSIVE, IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY - SAVE AND FACE THE FACT THAT IT COST $3500.00!

Kyle--

BALONEY! If what you say is true--welcome to so called Fair Trade price fixing which took a hit from the attorney general in the '70s--sporting goods, cameras, electronics, etc.

Read my comments in LatestDVXNews on the subject.

You shouldn't be so tired of this question. Comsumers deserve better than collusion, limited distribution, price fixing--simply because they want or love a product. It's just that when a product quickly reaches a price point and locks in--it's the consumer that needs to pay attention. This whole idea of "list" and "street" pricing smells like manufacturer dictating its street sale price. NYET. ILLEGAL! Collusion--and it doesn't even have to be obvious.

Speak up! Or you'll be paying $4000 soon enough...

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

buying a DVX100 is an investment so Buy at your own risk. If you feel 100% confident with spending a few thousand dollars on camera on Ebay then go ahead with that decision. Otherwise order from people like EVS or B&H or where I got mine which is Buydig.com

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

Re: Okay why shouldn't i just get the dvx100a on e

I posted this before, I bought my camera from a "Power Seller" and they sucked! I will never do it again, and I've bought very expensive things on ebay before, more than my DVX cost. I did get a factory sealed US Warranty camera but it was HELL to get it shipped. I did save about $150 dollars from what I'd pay at B&H, was it worth it? NO! I was stressed that these people would ever ship my product, my eyes widened by saving money, but I aged dramatically until UPS actually delivered my camera.

NOTE ON EBAY FEEDBACK! If someone, I don't care how many 1000's of feedbacks they have, have more than a few negative comments on a continous monthly basis, that is a serious RED FLAG. It is not hard to make ebay people happy, power seller means nothing. Call them and see how warm and fuzzy they make you feel. If your convinced, well, place the order.

Another point. People will post feedback before they'll ever need to use their warranty. Warranty no good--oops, it's too late. Also, having a camera's US warranty card does not necessarily mean you have a vaild warranty. Some companies require proof of purchase from an *authorized* dealer before doing warranty work.
