Oh yes in maybe another 12hrs I will own a Brand New Nikon D90, and I want you guys to know that I will be picking your brains until I master it. So any recommondations on a good book or dvd or any tutorials would help a great deal.

it looks like a good camera.

But look for a deal or wait for a price drop.

Def Jam.....word now that brings back memories....I was a DJ in a past life

I might have to talk to you about licensing some tracks for my film.

There's no decent books or DVD's that I know of. To get started check out the understanding and optimizing the D90 movie mode thread. I've been putting together a D90 tutorial based on stuff I've compiled from this forum that I'll get around to finishing and posting soon.

Don't buy a D90 now wait for the possile announcement today about new Nikons, you might be able to get the features of a D90 for nearly half the price. Seriously cancel if you can.

@staygettin @jamesmallonuk
The D5000 has been officially announced and I would still stick to the D90. The price is a whopping $849.95 according to Amazon and lacks some features such as AF-motor (a deal-breaker for me), worse LCD, less controls etc. The movie performance looks to be identical to D90.

I would still think about waiting to the next release form Nikon hopefully by the Summer, a D400 type camera. I think today's announcement leaves nikon a likely open door for the next camera.

If you have to shoot in the next couple of weeks then sure go for the D90 or the new D5000 but people will be talking about the panasonic GH! next on this forum. I would buy the Nikon and the lenses you want then you can upgrade as the likely new Nikon appears.

don't buy it you'll regret it

@staygettin: You should seriously consider getting the upcoming Panasonic GH-1 which trumps the D90. This I think is basically what the D90 should have been.

I think that's bad advice. If he can hold out for a few months a Nikon with full HD 24p is very likely and then a GH1 would of cost him a lot and he will have a bunch of silly little lenses. I think GH1 will have its time in the sun but it will be short lived.

The d90 is a great purchase--I don't regret it for a second! It is an excellent still camera as well.

The movie mode--within its' limitations is highly filmic--16mm style. Nothing I have seen of the GH-1 is as good.

In the mean time, you will be building a system of full 35mm lenses, filters/mattebox/follow-focus, etc. that will follow you in a year or two when Nikon (or Canon) finally gets it all right (or RED if their prices drop). You will only be out an $850 body as you swap in a better one.

The GH-1/4/3rds systems are a compromise from the start. In a year or two you will be kicking yourself for not building a system around a full 35mm camera.

As a record producer and filmmaker I have to say that the D90 look suits the kind of music you're producing. The GH1 might look a bit nice.

Yikes. Seems like the worst possible time to buy. Anytime you're going to invest in equipment, you have to look at it as such -- an investment. Treat it like you would a stock. Buy low, sell high, right? The D90s will be popping up on Ebay and Craig's list left and right once the GH1 is released (not because it is necessarily better, but because people want what's new). You'll probably save upwards of 200 bucks if you wait 60 days.

No one is going to consider the GH-1 and the d90 interchangeable. For most users (not concerned as we are with the fine points of the movie mode), the d90 is a much higher level SLR still camera. The GH-1 is a high-end point and shoot in comparison--one of the reasons I went with the d90 a while ago is because I decided that it was in fact time for me to move up to a very high quality SLR still camera. The d90 incorporates a high light sensitivity and low noise sensor that a year ago would have cost you $2,000. The stills I am getting with it are fantastic, and for that reason it will never be considered a bad investment by me.

I don't think anyone is saying anything bad about the D90's still taking capabilities....it's the movie mode that's in question. Not that it doesn't look good in its own right...but me personally it's just not there. It, from what i see, is an excellent stills cam. But there are also lots of folks who buy it for its movie mode and could care less about its stills capability. It is what it is...primarily a camera and not a camcorder replacement. So I would expect it to be weak in the movie mode area.

Now when it comes to the GH-1...it's not really a stills (only) camera...but some sort of hybrid. It has more manual functinality than any of these stills/movie cameras. As someone mentioned before if you were to take a 4/3rds movie and a full-frame 35mm equivalent camera movie...you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. My point is, as someone earlier suggested, you are not really starting off with a compromise with the GH-1 (I'm guessing he was talking about the crop factor). I say "not" because you have the opportunity to use "any" lens from your personal lens collection on a cam like this. I think that is more of an advantage than the so called crop factor "disadvantage." JM2C
