Ok, I goofed...!

I know I'm going to get slammed for this one (and rightly so). Would you believe I accidentally threw out some files that my sequence is dependent on? Now when I start up FCP, my last project sequence doesn't load. So I go into the autosave vault and load from there, only after loading it tells me some files are still missing.

Now mind you, my captured source footage is still intact, the autovault saved sequence appears to be intact in the timeline. I can move the playback cursor with my mouse over various scenes and see them in the canvas window frame by frame. But when I go to play back the sequence timeline, my FCP just crashes. Am I going to have to start a whole new sequence from scratch again? Help!

PS: these crashes seem to have started since I downloaded the latest OS update from apple for Panther 10.3.3. Anyone else having a similar problem?

Re: Ok, I goofed...!

Do you know what files you tossed? If you tossed some render files, you could try rendering the sequence before playing it.

Re: Ok, I goofed...!

Hi Jive,
when I look at the sequence in the timeline, nothing is red indicating it requires rendering. However, I took your suggestion and when I tried to reconnect, I chose not to reconnect with render files. Afterwards, I tried to render the whole thing but it rendered an audio file.

Again it happened. I tried to play my timeline, got the spinning beachball and crash, my FCP shut down. Again, I can see the individual frames as I move the playback line over the timeline with my mouse. I just can't play them.

I didn't think I was throwing out anything vital because I thought what I was throwing out was a quicktime render of older sequence exports. I guess I did throw something vital out. Sux, I might have to redo the whole thing now.

Thanks again for the suggestion though.

Re: Ok, I goofed...!

Ok, I figured it all out. Turns out I didn't throw out what I thought I did. The big problem of the crashing was due to the upgrade to OS 10.3.3. When I downgraded to the original Panther install, the crashing stopped and I was able to run my timeline again based on the autosave vault files. The files that were coming up as missing were from an old sequence which I didn't want anymore anyway. THAT was what I thought I had thrown out in the first place. Glad to see I didn't goof like I thought I did.

If anyone else is having problems with sudden crashes using FCP4 and are using OS 10.3.3 I suggest do an install in place of the original Panther off the CD. Fixed it for me.

Thanks again Jive

LOL :)

Glad you got it working. It seems that most times Apple issues an upgrade, even apple states that those using FCP, quicktime, and some apple owned programs should not upgrade :)
