My apologies for jumping to conclusions on your unmentioned statement.i didn't say hardware incompatible!
motherboards for amd almost always have ati chipset on it tho, where if you wanted nvidia chipset, you would go intel, not sure about the benchmarks you mention, lower priced ati cards vs power efficient nvidia maybe, that must be it. some nvidia cards are specifically built for power efficiency and they do exactly what they are supposed to.
but in reality nvidia cards are usually better overall.
As for the benchmarks, here's some: http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/17747/5
They're more evenly matched than I expected, though let's compare prices shall we? As of this writing, on Newegg a GTX285 and 295 (the top tier Nvidia cards until the Fermi cards come out) are roughly $380 and $530 respectively. Compare this to their ATI competitors, the 5850 and 5870 at $300 and $400 respectively.
Even better is the fact that you don't even have to spend this ridiculous amount on a GPU. The middle-ground competitor is the Radeon 5770 vs. the GTS 250, with the nvidia winning the price front (By about $40). Yet these benchmarks show a huge increase in GFLOP performance on the 5770.
Like I said, I'm not saying nvidia is bad. I'm sticking with it myself because of CUDA (which I absolutely love), and am really ashamed of nvidia for slacking off lately. There's supposed difficulties in getting the GF100 out, but I hope it does soon, as I'm due for an upgrade soon enough. For your purposes, nvidia probably *is* the better choice, because of CUDA.
