I don't know if this could be done in firmware, or is already covered (in case i apology!) but:
As the focus ring is not mechanical, why is it not possible to make it more precise when focus'ing in on far away objects?
The thing would be kind of a software gear, so that when you hit at ca 10 meters you can double the motion to focus and at ca 25 meters you can quadruple the motion.
This would have to be done seemlessly, though, and I see that it is not always a viable solution, so one could add a menu item to turn this function on or off.
