OIS soften image? & with dvRigPro?

When shooting hand held and having the OIS turned on, will it soften or degrade the resulting image at all?

I did a test yesterday walking around my garden with the OIS ON and it seemed to smooth out alot of the sharp jerkiness i was seeing before, just wondering if that was at the expense of some resolution.

Also, should i turn the OIS on when using a DV-RigPro? It's not really a tripod but it's not really hand-held either.

I'd like to know what you guys think

cheers

It won't hurt your image quality at all. I would turn it off when using a DVrigPro. Anytime I have the camera on a support, I turn it off.

I am not a technical person, but I have heard that, to achieve image stabilzation, the circuitry blows up your image ever-so-slightly so that it "has room" to stabilize it (i.e. reposition the picture to whatever specific points it is chosing in the picture). I could be wrong.

I think you are referreing to Digital Image stabilization. The dvx has an Optical image stabilizer which kind of works similar to our eyes.

Yes, that's mostly true, and it is often stated here.
It's a good rule, but like everything, it's not always to be followed.
I recall a recent interview with the HVX on a tripod. Outdoors in a gazebo. Interviewee is yapping away. His dog is laying down, and apparently in awe of being in the presence of an HVX or eyeing up the fluffy mic; it is wagging tale. Friggin' tale has enough momentum to shake floor which tripod sits on. OIS saves the day. :)

Thank you, Teeck, for the good information. Just as important, thanks for passing it on in a pleasant manner. Too many times those with the information bestow it in a condescending way. Again, many thanks for not doing that.
