OH F!

I just dropped my baby from about a foot and a half onto the carpet.  The focus ring has snapped off.  Only one of the three holes looks stripped (red circle), but it looks like Panny has some extra holes for aholes like me (blue circle):

EDIT: I think I was wrong about the holes.

The screws are all attached to the ring now:

The teeth on the focus ring look okay.  I think I can salvage it with some patience and a phillips head, but does anyone know any good repair shops in NoVa? EDIT: No, I'm screwed. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to send it to Jersey.

Re: OH F!

Bummer!

Never thought about it until now but the lens shade is poorly designed when it comes to taking an impact.

The only good thing is that we get to take a look at the internals of the thing.

Re: OH F!

Gabe- if you have warranty you should send that camera in and have it professionally done. Take advantage of your warranty bro. You don't want to mess up that baby of yours.

Gabe

I feel for you. I've been there, done that. 2 days before a shoot my pany hit the floor nose down. I got it fixed in 1 day and a half ... for $450. I needed a new focus ring. Hopefully you don't.

Go here for service centers near you.

if this link doesn't work, just go to panasonic.com - go to support - then in the right corner of the screen go to "find a service locator near you."

good luck
Bill

Re: OH F!

Ouch!

Never would've thought the camera was quite that fragile, but I guess if it impacts in just the right (or wrong) way, snap!

A while back, I was shooting some basketball footage for a spec ad and the ball bounced off the rim and right into my lens, but luckily, no damage. I think my Sennheiser boom deflected some of the blow.

Best of luck with repairs :)

Thanks, Bill. The link works, but I can't seem to enter the model correctly to find the nearest dealer -- I sent Panny an email last night.

I am under warranty. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it doesn't cover being a jackass.

Re: OH F!

Oh man. Sorry--that royally sucks. Ideally, the hood should really take the brunt of the impact and protect the lens. You can't reattach the focusing ring with the two remaining screws?

Re: OH F!

Gabe sorry to hear that man. Good luck and make sure you double wrap with bubble tape and if you're going to use those styrofoam peanuts, put a small piece of rubber in there too, so if they cause static electricity, it doesn't shock your camera's electronics on the way there.

(this is like my worst fear, I had my camera on my tripod, and someone didn't tighten it yet, and out of the corner of my eye, I could see it slowly dip down, I ran over and caught it just in time...noone touches her anymore)

Re: OH F!

Thanks for the sympathy.  The good news is there's an authorized place in MD, less than a 100 miles from me, and they've been very repsonsive this morning.  The bad news is they don't have the part.

Thanks for the shipping tips too -- never heard about using rubber.  I think I'm going to deliver/pickup myself for peace of mind.

EDIT: The repair place is Specialized Communication in Smithsburg, MD (near Hagerstown): http://www.spec-comm.com

I got them as an authorized repair shop from a Panny rep -- I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

Re: OH F!

Funny this topic just came up. I just recently dropped my camera (fell off the endtable) with the side monitor open. When the camera hit the floor it landed on the sun shade and side view finder. The view finder snapped shut not off when hitting the ground.

So far I don't see any damage thank god. Tonight will be the first time using it since the fall though. So far all checks out well but you never know.

Re: OH F!

I think I'm going to start attaching my DVX to my hands w/ gaff tape.

Re: OH F!

At this point, I'm considering some sort of facial piercing so that I can just hang it from that. If it gets smashed there, I've got other concerns.

Why not just string it through two nipple rings? ;D[/quote]

Yet another brilliant idea from this board! When will the information train stop?
