Offloading SxS card

Hey guys, I upgraded to a new MBPro w/o the expresscard slot. Does anybody know if one of these will work for offloading cards?

I read somewhere that there's 2 different types of expresscard based devices... PCIe and USB and that SxS cards are based on PCIe and aren't compatible with the USB stuff... has anybody found any luck finding a cheap solution for offloading cards on a non-express card connected computer besides connecting to the cable to the camera?

Not to waste your time with my response since I don't have a cheaper suggestion but...

I too looked around for something "cheaper" then decided if I'd spent the money on my camera and all the support gear it was counter-productive to put a weak link in my work flow chain. Weak link being something which was not as reliable nor truly helped me improve my work flow.

For this reason I went ahead and bought the Sony reader for the $250 plus price.

Result? Happiness on my part simply because it downloaded the video off my card so much faster than when I used the camera connected to my MacBook Pro.

From the camera I was getting a download speed of just over 2 times the record rate while with my reader it's over 5 times as fast.

I'm not saying you are making a mistake by trying to get something else. What I am suggesting is to make sure your goal is not simply based on dollars and cents. The added download speed off the card makes my life easier. Especially when I'm shooting a long project and can't stop everything to use the camera as a reader to get video off the card.

For these reasons I've never looked back after making my purchase.

I use a 15 inch MacBook Pro which does not have the express card slot. It's still a big enough screen for me to edit comfortably and easy to carry around while I travel. My own version of saving a buck instead of spending the money to get a 17 inch MacBook Pro which has the slot/reader built into it.

The extra weight and size of a "17", the amount of travel I do, plus the added cost for the larger computer were the major reasons I went the direction i did.

You have to decide which of your own variables are a priority in your specific situation. Just wanted you to be sure and base your decision on all variables and not just $. ;)

@EX1r777: Thanks, I'll check that out.

@Lenssmith: Ya, I hear you, and I would have done that 3 years ago when this was my main camera. I don't use this camera a whole lot anymore and I could care less how fast it offloads the cards since I also shoot with the MxM adapter which is slower as snot but I still have one 32gb SxS card. So I can use my built in SDcard reader for my MBPro for the other cards. In my situation, it makes no sense to buy the sony reader.
