Offloading P2

No, to offload a P2 card via USB you have to switch out of camera mode and then you're basically using the camera as a cardreader. With firewire you can do the same, or you can use the camera to control and external hard drive and dump the contents of your P2 card to it. Again you have to switch out of camera mode to do this.

In order to accomplish continuous recording you have to record directly out the firewire to a computer or eject the P2 card, copy the contents off and wipe it clean before the card in the camera fills up. This is possible if your using a computer set up that is fast enough. (a basic laptop with an external 7200 rpm hard drive has been fast enough for me)

Is this example correct?:

Recording 720/25p on one of the new PAL cams using 2 cards I will I be able to keep recording without a break, offloading 1 card at a time to a laptop hooked up to a G-Raid.

Also, is it possible with the Pal camera to downconvert from HD to dv in camera?

And finally, is it still the case that the fs-100 will not record native?

Thanks.

no firewire with PCs? Why not? I couldnt get the USB driver to load because I couldnt get the computer to recognize through USB. But I was able to capture through firewire even though Avid didnt recognise any desks or cameras, I just had it streaming and captured. Avid complained about it but it still worked.

Yes you can do that. However, be aware that it is very difficult to swap cards without some jiggling of the camera.

To its own DV tape, yes. To the firewire port, no.

The fs-100 will not record if you set the camera to 720/25pN mode, because no data is issued from the firewire port. It remains to be seen whether the firestore will do an on-the-fly conversion from 720/25P mode down to just storing only the active frames when recording. Don't bet on it, but it would be a nice feature to see.

By no firewire, I mean no using firewire to connect in DUB mode. For streaming firewire is the right choice. For dub mode it isn't -- it just plain isn't reliable, and it's not meant to be -- the manual specifically says "firewire is not guaranteed for file transfer/dub mode on the PC, use usb 2.0 instead".

On the PC USB2.0 is guaranteed to work, firewire isn't.
On the Mac firewire is guaranteed to work, USB isn't.

It's just the way it is. Firewire does sort of work for dubbing sometimes, but then it doesn't -- so if you try to use the non-guaranteed method, don't be surprised if it sometimes doesn't work.

But I was able to capture through firewire even though Avid didnt recognise any desks or cameras, I just had it streaming and captured. Avid complained about it but it still worked.
Yes, firewire streaming works on both platforms, I've done it to avid and Canopus on the PC, and to FCP on the Mac. Firewire is for streaming and it works fine for that.

But if you're going into dub mode, to use the HVX as an external card reader, don't use firewire with a PC for that. Just don't. It's not guaranteed to work. Use USB 2.0 instead. On the Mac, use firewire for dubbing, but on the PC use usb2.0.

Did you (assuming your PC's USB port is USB2.0) remember to go to option 9 in the camera's menu and select "usb device" before trying to transfer your files to the PC? Won't work any other way. (if not, I can tell you I make the same mistake).

And yes, you surely can live capture to the AVID Xpress Pro HD but then only if the recording selection (choices above) are set to "1394 device" which of course rules out being able to USB transfer your files (at the same time or setting).

Am I talking in circles here or what?

(edit): oh great, Barry beat me again -- will have to learn to type faster . . .

maybe my final question!:

Can you downconvert to the camera's dv tape from the fs-100?

Being on a tight budget it's quite frustrating having to decide between p2 cards/laptop, and firestore.

okay an add-on:

If I need to downconvert hd video that i've transferred to the g-raid by means of the laptop to sd for editing, how would I do that?

I use avid express pro HD which doesnt yet work with 720/25p. I like the avid and have been told that they are working on it. However, til that magically day I'd like to still be editing what I shoot.

I switched to USB in the menu and still nothing happened. No pilunck sound of a new device. I tried another cable just in case but nothing and yes, I have USB2. Oh well. Im going to try the laptop P2 card way tomorrow.

I'm having the same problem as Aram here. The Camera isn't recognizing the USB connectoin for some reason. It just sits there, saying DEVICE DISCONNECT

HELP!

Make sure the camera isn't in IEEE or IEEE HOST mode. Then go into MCR mode, and once in MCR mode, hold down the MCR button for two seconds.
