Official Tripod F.A.Q's

Seriously for the HVX with Mattebox etc the Bogen 516 can do the job. But once you use satchler theres no turning back ....... too bad its exe.

Dan,

Where did you buy from? What would I expect to pay for the Sachtler DV-6SB head with Miller Solo DV carbon fibre legs?

Hi John:

I purchased from Abel Cine Tech here in Burbank. I think with everything, it ended up around $2,200.00,

Best,

Dan

I'm very happy with my new Bogen 519/525 -combo. It's soooo smooth :D It comes with two changeable springs which cut the 2lbs --> 22lbs range. And when you mount the spring inside it's also fully adjustable so you can get a perfect balance with any gear below 22lbs. I think that you don't get so much more with the Sachtlers that it would be reasonable to spend double that price for a tripod combo. You could buy that 519 head and have some lighter legs for example Miller.

If you want to know anything about this head, just ask. I was once in that same situation: I just raised and raised my budget before I realized that am I seriously gonna need that expensive tripod to have nice shots?

The head costs 859$ at bhphotovideo, so not bad for that quality head!

Here's one review to help the decision:

I think its pretty much same head like the Vision 3.

Another big vote AGAINST spreaders- floor or mid.

They get in the way ,and they are another weak point in the tripod. Although I love their heads ( use to own a 18P), I hate working with Sachtler legs !

I've used Gitzo's for near 20 years, and they are the bees knees. I currently own the CF 1325 and a 1500 series CF model (forgot the exact number- big thick tubes). I'm sure the Miller solo is great as well -just think twice about going with spreaders.

As others have said, spend money on the tripod the first time and you'll avoid spending more later. When I began freelancing, I bought a tripod first (Sachtler 18P/ CF Gitzo), long before ever getting a camera. It was a $5000.00 expenditure and worth every penny.

Did I mention that I hate spreaders ?...

badlaa, the only issue I have with the combo is the 525 legs. Putting an m2, mattebox etc you may have some leg slip after awhile. I tested the legs and with a push they slid down.

Thats weird, I just tested my 525legs pushing them down almost my full weight on them and no slipping. Have you tried tightening the locks with that allen key which came with that package?

Thats interesting. I may go with the Miller Solo legs and the DV6 instead. Are the CF legs without a spreader sturdy enough?

Check the specs for the particular model, otherwise...

With the Millers and Gitzos - yes. They are in an entirely different league from the Bogens. If you want to save some money and don't mind a bit more weight, look into the metal Gitzos. More bang for the buck. Good luck

Hi Taionyx:

I am writing this from Tuscon, I just shot all day at Old Tucson studios with the HVX mounted on a DV-6SB with the Miller Solo DV legs. Solid and sweet! I am so thrilled with this new combo, it is awesome and was well worth the money. I am very satisfied with the moves I was doing today with the setup, whip pans, tiny moves during interviews, etc.

All the best,

Dan

Vinten Vision 3 vs Sachtler DV 6 SB

Vinten Vision 3 vs Sachtler DV 6 SB

If you were going to buy a tripod, your very first tripod, you own a HVX
camera, which of these two would you buy:

Vision Vinten 3
or
Sachtler DV 6 SB

I like the 2-stage tripod on both. I'm not quite sold on the Cartoni but
I'm not oppose to it. I'm reading that Vinten and Sachtler are better made.

Thanks for your time.

How about the 503 head on the Mdeve 50mm sticks? Anyone ever use the Mdeve 50mm line? I'm looking for quick setups with my HVX and this seems reasonable, however I know little about tripods.

Pro tripod question

Bogen 501 Head on Bogen 3046 Sticks

Anyone know a way to do this? Both the sticks and the head have female ends so I'm wondering if there is an adapter or a turnaround for the tripod that will give me a male end to attach the tripod head to (all I saw on the B&H site was 3/8 to 1/4).
