official Panasonic statement text is only this:

"We recommend to select 1-area AF in 30p or 60p frame rate for more comfortable Auto Focus speed. When you select 24p, 1-area AF is recommended.

If you are still experiencing slower than desired AF, Panasonic suggests to override AF by pressing the shutter button halfway down.

Panasonic pledges to further improve the AF quality."

It sort of makes sense, the 225 point auto focus area covers a large amount of the frame so could focus on anything inside that area, and the camera doesn't know what the subject is. Contrast detection likes to focus on contrasting areas, often the background has more detail than the foreground, so the smaller the focus target the less distractions, although that then requireds keeping the single AF area on the subject. Certainly some of the poorer autofocus examples of the GH5 the camera just fixes on the background, it's not that it hasn't focused at all.

Still the 225 point auto focus area is completely configurable as well, we don't have to use all the 225 points.

I was already using the shutter button halfway approach with continous autofocus off, it avoided any of the focus hunting whilst stilling allowing using auto focus.

Regards

Phil

Is there any independent confirmation of this statement? I find it very hard to believe anyone at Panasonic would say such a thing. Especially considering I have been using face detect +3 speed and +2 sensitivity with great success using a 15mm f/1.7

Just seems a bit of nonsense if you ask me

Keep in mind that, different lens, yields different results. I am not saying the alleged Panasonic statement is true.

Can you post an example? I'd like see what you consider "great success."
