As far as i understand, you can offload the update anytime you want and load it to another F3, so is that mean this s-log feature can be rent-able in the future?

Yes, I met with Sony engineers 2 days ago and this is confirmed. You can load the upgrade to any F3, but you'd have to unload it first from whatever other F3 you had it on first or it wont work. There is no way to copy the file, its just like a dongle, you have to have it loaded and unloaded.

So long as renters verify that the upgrade is unloaded once they return to a rental there seems to be no problem with being able to rent this option out. I for one will be upgrading and possibly purchasing a second to rent out to others.

It is interesting but sounds good, if you're someone who's not using s-log feature on every production , at least you can rent it whenever your production requires it, nice to have an option.

So, regarding the dongle...

1. Is the 32GB card an SxS Pro Card, or an SxS-1 type card (in terms of the flash storage...)
2. Formatting the card for data storage use doesn't affect the hardware key, right?
3. Will the SxS dongle card work for storage purposes in other XDCAM cameras? (EX1, EX3?)

Now I'm confused. Is it like a dongle, that the copy has to be in the card slot for the camera to have those functions? A la Magic Lantern for the T2i.

Or is it like a software suite, you're supposed to uninstall it to sell it or rent it. Software usually has a checking device, like an internet connection.

Hmmm Doesn't the F3 have GPS? The camera that spies on you... then kills your footage if you're being bad... a 007 camera! LOL.

I think the SxS card is for security purpose and marketing as well, what i understood from AbelCine's explanation, the update comes with the card you install it and afterwards you can use the card like any other sxs card , but if you have an option of offloading then I'm not sure if you need to do this with that specific card or can you do it with any other sxs card! I'm not sure.

I don't know *how* the encryption works, but practically speaking:

1. You purchase a special SxS card with an enycrption key loaded for the 4:4:4 option.
2. To install, insert SxS hardware key into camera, use "Install Option" menu selection.
3. The license somehow transfers from the specialty SxS card to the camera. The camera is now considered loaded, the special SxS card, unloaded.
4. To uninstall, insert special SxS card. Use "Remove Option" menu selection.
5. This returns the license to the special SxS card.

I would assume options cannot be unloaded to regular SxS cards, and quite possibly, only back onto the same hardware key they were installed on.

All indications are that once the option is installed, the key card can be removed without penalty, but will no longer have an installable license.

In practice this suggests the 444 option cards could be rentable as a separate item.
