OFF TOPIC - NY Crash

... I think they might have been trying for the water landing there, but overshot it.

The impact was on a side of the building that faces away from the river.

It is right at the end of the visual fly zone where it turns into La Guardia flyspace.

Some are speculating that the plane may have been swerving out of a near miss or trying to solve a problem such as fuel loss.

There was a Mayday that went out to the FAA.

This just sucks.

Not simply the fact that he was a Yankee but to me that makes it a member of the family (in an obsessed fan sort of way). I was on the phone with my father and we were both shocked by it and the only thing I could manage to say was 'if we won that series he wouldn't have been flying'

Two weeks ago there was an acticle in the paper about him being a pilot (NYTimes).

Dudes.... this just sucks regardless of the fact that he was a baseball player, celebrity, or Yankee. Just an awfull thing and my heart goes out to his family.

This aircraft executed a perfect 90 degree turn into the building. It was intentional, not an accident. He was not talking to the tower.

It's a suicide. If its the pitcher himself, OK, then the playoffs is probably his motive for suicide.

However I keep my passport in my plane even when I'm not flying, and I have the same plane as this Yankees pitcher. People fly our plane all the time and if some nut does this, doesn't mean I was on board. We'll see if it was him. Since he hasn't made a statement, he's probably the one that did it.

Lastly, the ballistic parachute is not automatic, you have to pull the handle, and you really really don't want to do it unless you're in a flat spin and can't recover.

Dude, nothing says that it was a suicide... you don't know what you're talking about... His body was found at the scene.

remember the good old days when a plane crashing in a building was an obscure off-topic news event and not an international mega event with press conferences from everyone from the mayor to the governor to the FEMA director etc etc.

Did anyone else watch the original footage from that day 5 years ago on CNN Pipeline? It struck me how even when the seccond plane hit the reporters were still saying it had to be an accident.

I just find it sad that after that day the first thing that comes to mind when something like this happens is TERRORIST ATTACK.

I think this is what the media often refer to as a "personal tragedy". nothing more.

Now they say two people aboard.
An instructor and a student.
They also say almost everything burned up.

If you were gonna commit suicide why take an instructor and potentially some random people in an apartment building with you.

Now that's deep.Thats why I prefer to keep my feet on the ground.

Maybe the mods should start a news thread. For those with on the scene footage in these cases....Ah nah! scratch that, Then it would take away the element of this cool site.

I would have to disagree with the comment that I don't know what I'm talking about when I'm at the LaGuardia operations center.

You just don't turn a Cirrus (or any modern aircraft) 90 degrees into a building 400 feet above the ground above one of the most restricted airspaces in America.

The reason I thought it was terrorism at first:

1. Sept 11 (NY/DC)
2. Mar 11 (Madrid)

Today is Oct 11. And tomorrow is the USS Cole anniversary.

the plane was distressed before crash they said. Alot of things could've caused it, pilot error, lack of experience, ran out of fuel- but i dunno about that one.

The date coincidence rattled me at first too.

Shawn, do you have any idea why planes are even allowed to fly close to Manhattan anymore. Seems like allowing that is just too perilous.

Yeah there's definitely a few things that don't add up. We fly over Manhattan in the helicopter all the time (in fact I did about a half hour before the crash) and it amazes me that there's such seemingly unlimited access. Theoretically, even if someone is talking to the Tower, there's nothing stopping them from crashing intentionally or dropping something. On the flip side it'd be really tough to completely restrict the airspace. Everything is so close to LaGuardia, Kennedy, and Newark...some of the biggest airports (and busiest airspaces) in the world.

Although to me this doesn't sound intentional. CNN seemed to be reporting two different flight paths that could have been this guy (one across the park and one up the river). I suppose it's possible that he saw something that made him bank off once he got to the river (another aircraft or birds maybe) and then didn't realize how close to the building he was. I'm sure we'll get a lot more details in the days to come.

Slightly off topic: Did anyone see all that blue tilted Chopper Video that was on CNN? That wasn't me but was from our Chopper. Looks like I have to train the other camera guy a little more.:)
Edit: Apparently they had difficulty maneuvering to the correct side of the building. LGA wouldn't let any of the news choppers up north above the building so they had to shoot from way far south and finally reposition to the west side of Central Park.

there really isnt alot of dammage to the building? just fire dammage hardly and impact dammage

OK so our leading theory is that he was busting Class B airspace (meaning he was in LaGuardia airspace, and if you get caught, the FAA can say 'bye bye' to you ever flying again). We think he (they) busted the airspace, got really nervous, tried to get back in uncontrolled airspace really fast, perhaps stalled, lost altitude and had no where to go. That's why he turned TOWARD the buildings, AWAY from the airspace boundry.

Now that the instructor was confirmed on board, suicide is obviously out.

The airspace above Manhattan is not restricted, you just have to stay out of LGA Class B airspace. For the RNC for instance, they put up a no-fly zone (red circle).
