Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

This may not be directly pointed towards the April firmware release, but I have a question regarding the Odyssey. Is there any way to reset the number count on the clips? I can easily change the rest of the naming settings just fine, but I can't seem to find a way to reset that number. I know its a minor thing, but my OCD goes through the roof if my projects start with some odd number! :D

You can do that from the tool menu, left upper corner, one of those options... Don't have my O7Q handy at the moment but it's there.

I do not have my Odyssey in front of me but as I recall in the top menu at the left side I believe it is under RECORD > CLIP. From there you can reset the numbering sequence back to 000.

Cheers guys! :) I'll check it out when I come home. I find it somewhat illogical that its not placed with the other clip-name settings though!

I can tell you one thing: I'm about to set off for Broadcast Asia, so we won't be releasing anything next week.

Jeez... that's about the last thing any of us want to hear. Seems like as time goes on, Convergent is feeling less and less urgency to get anything out.

Mitch, you wrote this back on May 22: "So here is what I'll do: I'll give you a little less vague a target date. Under a month for the next firmware release. Might be considerably under a month, might not."

So that gives you a little under 10 days to release the next firmware update. My bet is you guys won't make it. Actually, I challenge Convergent to actually make one single deadline for once.

It's been pretty ridiculously slow on CD's end. If you guys miss this next deadline on June 22nd, it will be past the point of ridiculous. I really would like to be proved wrong.

I don't mean to be harsh, but it confuses me why a company can't release a firmware update because one (or two) employees are going to Broadcast Asia.

Your feature releases shouldn't hinge on the presence of someone you're sending off to a trade show to sell the device. Hire people the show off gear or hire a separate person to handle features/firmware releases. I feel like there is a weird balance of putting in tons of effort to sell a product that doesn't even have all of the features you are selling it with.

B&H finally no longer lists "Includes DNxHD Codec" for the 7Q, which it was falsely advertising for months.

well, by selling the device u get money .... by providing a firmware update u get hate .... its a company guys ... no charity

These types of firmware updates are not a free gift.
Convergent Design is short in fulfillment of features.
And they have a pretty bad track record in meeting the timelines.

That is not a lucky combination.

Nobody is asking for charity, we are just asking for what we paid for and was promised. A week an Asia? Just another excuse to delay what has been promised over and over. As Josh said, why does a firmware release hinge on an employee at a trade show selling features that don't exist?

Mitch and Convergent, you do realize how these endless delays are damaging your professional reputation? Just get it together and release something by June 22nd. I just want to see Convergent make one single deadline. I doubt they will do it.

There was a dan Keaton post may 12th in another forum :

"At this time, with our latest firmware 1.11.100, we support up to 1080p30 in our 4K to Apple ProRes 422 mode.

As soon as we finish our high priority current project, we will support 1080p60 in this mode and in regular Apple ProRes 422 mode.

We are close to being done with this, but I do not know if this will make it into our next firmware release or not.

Respectfully,

My personal speculation is they have engineers working on the Athena, and I can't see why it would not be the same team. Only normal when you have a shipping monitor that does do some wonderful recording to slide resources so you don't miss the next new product deadline. Pure speculation, the project dan spoke of could be something else. From Athena cd website :-

"Athena is scheduled to show as a production model at IBC 2014 with units shipping in Q4 2014"

whens ibc?

Thanks for posting Dan's post Timmy.

What could their current high priority project be? Athena? I certainly hope not and I don't see how they expect to sell any Athenas with their reputation being so thrashed by their inability to make a single deadline on the 7Q. Who would trust Convergent enough to buy from them again? Certainly nobody is going to buy Athena based on "Soon to be released features." Who's going to fall for that again?

Also, no 60fps 4K2HD in the next firmware? What would they possibly include since 4K compressed is out of the question as well? Some bug fixes? That just doesn't cut it.

Awww man this whole thread is depressing...one of you guys should go ahead and sell me your Odyssey7q. PM me so I can take this bad investment off your hands at a reduced price. Help me help you.

To avoid false expectation and pitchforks I suggest a future roadmap with upgrade schedule to be delivered to current owners of odyssey...you have to understand that many of us have purchased the unit beleiiving the compressed 4k, compressed 4k in 60p and 120 fps bursts will be available according to some of your earlier posts...since it is not happening it makes people who purchased the unit quite unhappy which on the long term is definitely not good...so maybe a future road map would make them more patient and less un-happy about the unit....what do you think? would that road map be possible?

Here's the problem with a roadmap: We can talk about what we THINK will be ready and in what order, but sometimes certain things prove to be more difficult than expected, so the order changes.

And we have given a roadmap of sorts. We said that we are going to do X & Y. But then everyone gets upset that it is not available right away. There is no way for us to win here.

[*] --> [RECORD] --> [CLIP]

I agree that this is in the wrong place and I have asked that it go where the rest of the clip naming info is located. But as we see from this thread there are bigger fish to fry at the moment.

would it be possible ( in future ) also ARRI D21 2880 x 2160 RAW 12 bit Bayer data @ 23.976, 24, 25psupport??

While technically possible, it is not going to happen. There are very few D21 cameras out there, and the differences between the D21 and the ALEXA ARRIRAW files are significant enough that they would take a fairly decent amount of programming time. Even if every single D21 owner purchased a D21 ARRIRAW license, we would have to charge a considerable amount to each in order for us to recoup the expense involved.

And this is why I don't like to give target dates. Based on what the engineers believed at the time we felt we would be ready in a week or two. But then we got hit by a major programming hurdle. In the endless testing that occurs we discovered a major file corruption had been introduced. So it pushed everything back.

After CineGear I spent three solid days with our engineering staff going oer what was and wasn't happening, how it effects us directly and how it effects us in perception. We do take this very, very seriously and frankly we purposefully keep the engineers in a bit of a bubble so that they can do their work. But the pressure is on.

The inner workings of our company are just that, our own business. But I will tell you that I am a part of a team that releases this stuff to the world. It is not just a bunch of programming, although obviously that is the important part. Then the documentation must be written. The manual must be updated (even though none of you read it. ;-) ). We need to tell people properly about it when we release and most importantly we need to be available to answer questions and provide support when clients make a change. You may consider yourself fairly self-supporting, but when we release firmware the phone calls and emails flood in. So it is our plan to be available and properly prepared for something like a firmware release.

Broadcast Asia is important to the people in that region. We need to support our clients and our dealers. This is a business and there are many considerations.

We do know, believe me.

We will not make the target date of June 22. This is why I hate giving target dates.

Your speculation is understandable but incorrect. I'm sorry but I cannot share proprietary information. We do have competitors out there.

Hey Mitch. No worries. Really. If you guys are working your hardest at it, then you're working your hardest at it.

I admit. I'm really excited for 4K compressed. I check here each day just hoping to see new firmware announced. We're all very excited, and it's easy to come here and type at a computer screen. Any disappointment online can come of very harsh. It's even worse on YouTube where i upload videos!

Anyway, you'll obviously let us know when it's ready. Pressure from the forum probably isn't going to push the release dates any closer. I don't know what else to say. Don't let it get to you.
