Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

We began deiveries to Europe late last year. As quickly as we can make them, new orders for Odyssey7Qs keep racking up. So while some seem to think that we are not delivering the truth is that we're spitting them out and others keep ordering more. This means that if you wait until there is a unit sitting on the shelf you will never get one. The only way to get in the stream is to preorder one with your dealer and then we'll deliver as quickly as possible.

I really can't give you an answer as to when you will get a unit in Germany. We are shipping hundreds of Odyssey7Qs every month and a significant portion are going to Europe. But while a given dealer might get a bunch in on a shipment, they are most likely allocated to clients already. And those clients may have ordered many months ago.

We're building them as fast as we can.

Just as a benchmark for others, I preordered my Odyssey 7Q from B&H on September 18th. That unit was just shipped to me today and should be here soon.

I know I appreciated others' updates over the past month or so, and I just wanted to pass my info onwards for anyone who is interested.

And I must note that B&H's fulfillment of backorders may be different than other dealers. Not because we are showing any special love to one dealer but because they may have fewer clients with preorders waiting. Also, many people put in orders and when the time comes to ship decide for whatever reason that they do not wish to buy at that time, so the order goes to the next guy. I see this happen all the time.

Hi Mitch,

Just ordered a 7Q from my local dealer. Was wondering if theres a possibly of the unit offering a sort of centre scan/crop of the sensor like the Sony F5 and F55 models do.
Ideally to be able to use either B4 or Super 16 lenses on the FS700 with the 7Q without vignetting.
Understand there is a whole kettle of fish involved with this...

Looking forward to it.

cheers - Tim

FWIW, pre-ordered in late August from AbelCine, current delivery estimation is hopefully end of Jan, possibly end of Feb (sounds like they're trying to get all current orders filled by end of Feb).

There's a slow trickle into Australia. From what I understand it may be a little while yet for us too. I've had my SSD's sitting on my desk since the end of Novemeber, haha. All neatly packaged in their anti-static bags, staring at me with longing, hoping to be used. It sounds like the 7Q is going to hit its stride firmware-wise by the end of February anyway, so I'm happy to get all the goodies at once around then if all goes well.

I can't remember when I ordered mine - sometime quite soon after it was announced though. According to CVP (who are pretty big in the UK), I'm number six on their list. No word from them yet though.

I'm assuming that the majority of the stock is going to the US to fulfil US pre-orders earlier. I think we'll have to be patient in the rest of the world.

I would suggest that this would be something to do in post. We will be offering a cutom frameline setting so that you can set a proper shot, and there's always our image zoom to better fill the frame.

Just to reiterate, we are shipping units in volume on a weekly basis. We have huge orders from around the world. We are trying to fulfill them fairly across our dealer network. In certain regions such as the EU we have a distributor which then parses out the units to the various dealers. I cannot speak for them other than to say that we are all committed to a fair and even distribution of product.

Hi Mitch

I also have preordered on August 30th and I spoke to the dealer before Christmas and they said that there was a problem with the pal system, in regards to recording and as you've mentioned a shortage in SDI connectors. Are these problems solved and do you have any idea of how many preorders, are left in Europe before you are through the list?
thank you for a very positive way of dealing all the weird questions in this forum.

I don't know the when & where of our preorder, just the running tally. Every week we ship out units but we also get more orders in, so the list continues to grow. It is currently in the thousands.

I don't know of any issue with PAL, other than perhaps interlace signals v. progressive. Who the heck wants to shoot interlace anymore?

You would not believe the quantity of BNC connectors we have, with more on the way. Every few years this happens. Imagine the demand for BNC connectors in patchbay panels and small racks that get assembled for the Olympics. They build vast cities of equipment each time and then tear it all apart afterward. They take a lot of the worldwide supply of BNCs, among other things.

It's incredible to conceive of a global shortage, but, it's real. When Boeing goes into production on a new airliner, the world's supply of carbon-graphite pre-preg is in short supply.

Just a quick word from a Noob: I bought into the advertising with regards to the FS700 & 4k. Thought that CD had it all together with Sony. Now I have a Monitor with 2 SSD's ... Should I sell the whole thing to the more patient folk? Speculating on a BM 4k is just as useless... As of Dec 1st they did not even have a production sample in Aus. Where is Prores ?

If you take the time to read this thread, you'll see that CD has been more than transparent with their plans. Compressed recording and 4K acquisition are coming, and they'll be available within the next couple of months. (Compressed recording is currently due Feb. 15) Are you suggesting that because your purchase won't have these features for a couple more weeks, that you no longer want it at all, ever?

I've personally paid for my Odyssey for about 2 months now, and I'm just going to be getting mine next week finally. These are the types of things that happen when you're on the bleeding edge with new technologies and new products.

If I'm in your shoes... which I practically am... I'm looking forward to the weeks I have with a fantastic monitor until CD releases a free upgrade that gives me compressed recording abilities and then, even 4K acquisition. The use of the monitor for those weeks will definitely be worth the couple bucks of interest my money didn't earn if I had waited.

Hi again Mitch, thanks as always for your reply's. Always much appreciated.
I think the crop mode something that you should look into a little more, as I believe more camera's in the future will offer this function. It is something I would pay extra for.
Unfortunately post is not really a viable option in most cases. Especially run and gun and broadcast.
There is a serious shortage of affordable super35 zoom lenses out there that are actually usable. Look at the disappointment that occured with the recent Sony 18-105 'pillow lens'.
As a camo who moved on from Digibeta and XDCam, the broadcast zoom is the thing I miss most. That and the handgrip they offer:)
On an FS700 (or any other future camera's the 7Q supports) a centre crop option with all the 4K sensors that are around, opens up a world of B4 and Super16 lens option.
WHich is essentially recycling. Which is good for the budget and the planet.

Any other takers?

cheers - Tim.
