Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Ok, I know we've done this to death and frankly it's giving me a headache but what does it mean - 10 bit 422 from a 1080 source? Is that true 10 bit or 8 bit in a 10 bit wrapper? Surely true 10 bit has to come from the raw source? Confused.

Hoping to save Mitch some time here:

It means that the recorder is capable of recording up to 10 bit 422 from an HD source. In the case of the FS700 this means it will record 8 bit 422 because that's all the camera will send out. You will end up with a 10 bit file but it will only hold 8 bits worth of data (so 8bit in a 10bit wrapper). Just like 99% of other recorders right now. This option does not come from the RAW source, it's what the camera is outputting now.

Only when the O7Q starts recording the down sampled RAW source will we see 10bit or greater 1080p files from the 700.

Does that help?

cheers
Paul

Brilliant, thanks for the clarification. Just one more question, the 10 bit 4K, will that be log encoded as originally planned? In fact all the 10 bits, can they be log encoded?

I would also like to ask very nicely whether as well as the 1080 from the 4K source, if there could be a straight 2K from the 4K source in the same manner. I'd like to use the full raster from the 4K and a straight half downsample could be done at very high quality. Any idea whether this would be 422 or 444?

cheers
Paul
10-bit 4K can be Slog2 or REC709. It depends how you send it from the camera over RAW. We suggest you use SLog2, but you can choose to override and send REC709, which we will faithfully record.

I'll pass on your 4K to 2K request. Seems reasonable enough. As with the derived 1080p from 4K, there is now enough color subsampling to make a full 444 image.

Paul explained it well. Remember that the Odyssey7Q is not just useful on the FS700. It can be used with dozens of different cameras outputting a variety of signals.

Sam, I listed six different levels of codec. To which are you referring?

I'm guessing Sam meant in the 4K compressed from the FS700 - the max frame rate seems to chop and change a bit on that with each announcement. On the original website it said 60p but the recent roadmap had itat 30p, now you've said 60p again.

To be honest I sort of assumed 60p was possible, but it would be capped at 30p as a requirement of your licence from Sony.

If it can do 60p 4K that would be awesome because it means it might also be able to record the buffered 4K (120fps). I'd settle for 25 of them a second first though :)

I am confirming.

Compressed codec roadmap:
Step 1 -- 422 10-bit 1080 (30p/60i) from 1080 source.
Step 2 -- 422 10-bit 1080 60p from 1080 source.
Step 3 -- RGB 10-bit or 12-bit 444 1080 60p from 1080 source.
Step 4 -- 1080 60p derived from 4K RAW (FS700 & C500)
Step 5 -- 422 10-bit 4K 60p from 4K RAW
Step 6 -- 422 10-bit 2K (?p) from 2K RAW

no mention of 24 or 25 - as I said I assume you mean up the the speeds quoted..

Can't wait!

Since we're at it here. It's only from the 4k stream we can get down sampled 1080p true 10 bit? And they are working towards that too?...Otherwise, with the popular codecs at 1080p were only getting a 10bit wrapper because the camera only puts out true 8bit at that resolution...I am correct?
Is the compressed 4k Raw DNG a true 10bit or 12? Lastly, we can we at least record continious 4k DNG up to 60 fps? Thanks

The camera has three levels of output: 4K RAW, 2K RAW and 1080 video.

The 1080 video is limited in the camera to 422 8-bit, but it is output over a standardized 10-bit stream. That just means they fill in the extra space with zeros so that it is a signal that conforms to broadcast standards. This is normal and it is what we record.

To get any more info than this, we cannot use the 1080 video signal. From the RAW data signals we are able to derive 1080p in true 10-bit. In fact we currently output it right now. You can set the camera to 2K or 4K RAW, the Odyssey7Q will see it, deBayer it and supersample it to 1080 video, then output it to our OLED panel and out our SDI and HDMI outputs. Plug in another recorder and you can capture it today. When we have the compressed recording available it will record this as well.

There is no compressed 4K or 2K DNG. Our Cinema DNG files are Uncompressed 12-bit RAW. We are currently licensed by Sony to record 2K RAW up to 240p, the top speed the camera can output in this mode. We are not currently allowed to record the 4K RAW.

I also thought it should be possible to plug in an other recorder like the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 over HDMI and may record the amazing sharp 1080p 10bit 422 from the 4K RAW Supersampled view like the O7q shows on the OLED monitor. But the external recorder actually does not recognize any input, is there a setting I have to change to get the 1080p image over HDMI on the O7q?

I got my O7Q yesterday yippiiee :> Im also curious about the 4k output. I outputted the 4k to a Class1 HD Monitor and the picture was so f***** brilliant. So much superior over 2K Raw. But i were not able to capture it, tried 2 different Blackmagic Decklinks. (no input detected). Curious because its just a normal 10bit HDSDI output.

Interesting. I know we've recorded this signal and done tests in the past. Don't know if we used Blackmagic Design gear or not. I'll have to talk to our engineers when we open on Thurs.

Ok... here's an easy question. When in focus assist (1:1 or 2:1) is there a way to "move around" to a specific part of the image or am I stuck with a zoom in on center? Another thing that I remember being mentioned early on was onion skinning, but I havent heard it mentioned as part of the update timeline at all. This is a feature I would find particularly useful.

I asked Mitch this earlier. He said it's on the roadmap as a future update, but at present it's centre crop only.

Both are coming, and sooner rather than later.

We are trying to be conservative in our forecasts, as people are understandably upset when we don't meet our targets. But if we get enough stuff done early and thoroughly tested, we will release updates ahead of schedule.

Hi Mitch ... we are waiting for 7Q in Germany. Any ideas when you will deliver the recorder to Europe? Local dealers are talking about March. Puuuuhh ... still an other long time to wait. Until now those announcements were unreliable.
So ... what's your realistic trustworthy schedule for hardware delivery in Europe e.g. Germany?
