Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

No 4K recording for Sony FS700 until Q2 2014, if there is no additional delay?
How sad.

Please keep development focused.
There is no need for pizza and coffee extensions.

Has Q2 2014 been voiced for 4K?

If you're referring to this conversation, this was chatting about the ability to record 4 streams at the same time, something we're also keen to get working asap (for other areas of our business)

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the update on the FS700 elements, is there any expected delivery on the quad record functionality?

I believe we're likely looking at Q2 2014 for that now.

Is there *any* other recording coming before Feb 2014 then, even normal 8 bit HD (beyond dpx's)?

That's really bad if so, it's basically a monitor until Feb and i'll still need to be rigged and recording with other hardware?

(I will test the 2K stuff properly next week, but the results i've seen so far seem to favour the standard output being noticeably better in terms of aliasing which i find extremely objectionable and will make roto and keying work very difficult - it's not just a visual thing for me, maybe the production version is different - lets hope so)

cheers
Paul

Guys you need to have some patience - you are early adopters - this is what happens. The Odysessey 7q is an absolutely beautiful piece of machinary. It's going to get there. It takes time. CD has already delivered huge with the nanoflash and the Gemini - they have a proven track record. When you are an early adopter you need patience. Think of the Red One when it first came out. Now look at it. You have a super beautiful monitor right now - and its only going to become better. This happens time and time again when you get something first. Mitch and the guys at CD are going to do their all to make the Odyssey 7q one of the best recorders on the market. Before it came out - the ability to do this kind of recording was only possible on the codex which weighs 10lb and cost 10x as much. Plus to make an amazing monitor included - it's quite the deal. Please just have a little patience.

Mitch and Co, have been the single, most community-involved company I have ever witnessed and keep us as up to date as possible. Development takes time, and I believe Mitch when they say they're making sure they do things right. I haven't even mentioned the possibility of 4K to my clients nor promised what I can deliver until I have the device in hand and have tested it.

I am still proud to be a pre-order holder for my Odyssey7Q. Thank you Mitch and all of CD for your hard work so far.

Would I rather have my 7Q in hand and recording 4K compressed today? Heck yes, and delays are disappointing. But they're also understandable and I give them full credit for being upfront and forward about their process.

Is it just me or does it seem like the Slow-Mo and normal speed recording functionality got prioritized? I know that's one functionality lots of people were wanting, so thank you for working on achieving that.

Since I got the O7q this week I tested a lot the FS700 raw recording, and it really captures the same quality from 24 to 240fps in 12bit - with their slog2 LUT its exactly what you expect from that 12bit image. Also there is no more noticable delay between the onboard display and the O7q which is one of the most important things. For me it is already an amazing device to use as monitor and recorder. We voted for the 240fps DNG few months ago and we got it in a perfect way, what the camera is able to deliver (even its a little bit compressed). Also from my side big thanks to Mitch for his fast response, Tina (for the fast activation) and the whole CD Team. I hope you guys have some holidays too.

So just to confirm: No 4K recording until February 15th at the earliest andin all probability (given previous roadmap changes) later?
When talking about 4K recording, I assume you mean FS700 (we already record 4K out of the Canon C500).

There are two options here. One is the 4K RAW. We can technically do it but our current licensing agreement with Sony does not allow it. We have asked them to reconsider. The other is transforming the 4K RAW to 4K video and then recording this to a compressed format. If we can get it ready earlier than mid-Feb. then we will release it, but this is why we make FORECASTS, not guarantees. There are simply too many factors at work.

Please believe me when I say that we want nothing more than to get all of our plans for the Odyssey7Q up and running as fast as possible. We have hired additional programming and manufacturing staff. We recently purchased a new building which is now being outfitted to become our headquarters and factory so that we can up our capacity that much more. But all these things do take time to do and to do right. All I can say is that I promise it's coming and give our best estimates as to when.

I'm not trying to have a go - I wanted to get some clarity on the timelines so I can communicate them to a client - I've a 4K job coming up in Feb, so I just need to give them the heads up that we may need to hire the Sony recorder. Your previous post was a little ambiguous on that, so I just wanted to check - and yes, I meant the FS700 4K recording.

BTW - are Sony showing any movement on the FS700 4K Raw licence? Can we do more to push them?

It's true. Early adapters take the lumps. The good news is the lumps are made of sugar. After seeing some quickly shot footage from the BMPC I'm confident image wise we made the right choice with the fs700. With the recorder, I don't think anything will come close for cheaper. We just got to sit tight, that's the least we can do for Mitch, Dan and the CD crew. I'm looking forward to March, for me that's a good time to pull the trigger, by then I hope they'll be plenty and ready to go. One more thing, I do see Sony releasing the RAW feature down the road to CD. That's a good thing too.

We cannot assure anyone of a delivery date for 4K recording. Please do not plan a shoot around something that is impossible for us to promise. Remember, even if we complete our work today, we still need to go through an approval process with the company behind the compressed codec before we are allowed to release it. That could take a day or it could take ... longer.

For all of our early adopters, please know that you will never miss out on anything with the Odyssey7Q. As we add features they will become available to you with no penalty. You won't have to pay any extra.

As for Sony, I cannot speak for another company.

Maybe this is just a case of misplaced priorities. My bread and butter is with HD (1920x1080). Releasing the O7Q, advertizing DNxHD from the beginning of the marketing campaign, then providing only DPX for HD compressed recording, well, that's just a real kick in the arse. Even 8-bit depth, 422, DNx220 would be preferable to DPX, which is just impossible to manage. What I have is a very hi priced monitor. While it does this very well, it's fundamentally not useable with it's current firmware. I could have deferred this purchase, had the facts been realistic from the get-go. 2k DNG is nice, but, really, it's rather a novelty.

This is why Sony doesn't provide customer support. While Dan, and now Mitch, are visible representatives, it's not good customer relations to publish timelines and make claims that are constantly slipping. While I don't beleive C-D has any malicious intent, the repercussions of putting any credence in marketing claims continues to be annoying...and at the least, diminishes credibility in a company.

I don't expect you to speak for them - I was just asking for your input as to where discussions are on the possibility of recording 4K Raw on the O7Q, if there has been any movement from Sony on that one. We put the post up on the Sony community forum a while back and it hasn't generated a response from Sony - so we're not even sure if they've seen it. I've also contacted the Sony prosumer Rep in Europe to request this change in policy.

Any idea who else we should be lobbying? I know you know that it would be a great thing for you guys, I'm just wondering who at Sony we need to inform it will be great for them too!

YES!

Is 1920x1080 (DNxHD or Prores) planned for February aswell? It would be way better to have Full HD in those codecs - before 4K. But it might be the exact same amount of work to program that, I have no idea...

Could you comment on this?

I have to completely agree with this. While 4K compressed and 2K RAW sounds great, the file sizes make it a special circumstance option that I think most people won't use too often. 1920x1080 HD is what most people are going to use most of the time so I think that really needs priority. Not getting HD 4:2:2 8-bit until mid-Feb is pretty disappointing, especially since it seems like 4:2:2 8-bit would run S-Log better and the current 4:2:0 codec.

So I am assuming there is no set timeframe now for 4:2:2 10-bit HD which I what I think most people really would use in real jobs?

I am happy with Mitch, keeping us updated on internal matters (FW development, manufacturing timetable). Of course, he will never be able to throw any further comments about ongoing discussions with SONY about changing their license. We cannot expect that much transparency before any agreement, that would be quite unprofessional.

From my point of view, recording HD is not the unique feature of the Odyssee7Q. It's the Q (quad) recording and the capability to re-encode Sony's FS700 raw stream. If I would need to record simple HD streams, I would be able to buy proven solutions in the market (including CD's products).

I hope, the programmers need just time to fine-tune the compressed coding and we will have both after codec's owner approval: HD and 4k compressed recording from SONY FS700 raw in one go. Mid February would be really great but I do not want to push hard. Q1 2014 was the initial schedule.

Oppsss. I think it came out wrong. I think most people would get more use out of 10-bit 4:2:2 HD than 4K compressed. But then again, I guess 10-bit is derived from the 4K stream so the 4K would probably have to come first. But yeah, at this point I would be happy with boring old 4:2:2 8-Bit sooner than later. Just something other than internal AVCHD.

4:2:2 8bit? You mean 4:2:2 10bit, right? They should at least have the 10bit signal situated. I really don't want anything to do with 8bit, especially with an external recorder attached.

Hey Mitch,

What happened to the Sony Battery Plate (CD-OD-LPLATE)? I want to buy one but doesnt look like anywhere has them for sale. I thought they were ready to ship a week or more ago?
