Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Wow, this thread took a turn into the Twilight Zone.

I will reserve the right to say that if anyone out there does something so absolutely nuts that it thoroughly tickles the staff of Convergent Design and we feel compelled to nominate you for a Darwin Award, well in that case you may have earned yourself a free repair for the entertainment value alone.

hahahah...love it!

Wow, this thread took a turn into the Twilight Zone.

I really can't expand much on what was supposed to be a bit of a joke comment. While I'm sure there may be some power related problem failure you could cause that somehow would not fall under the definition of "stupid" I can't think of it at the moment. We try to engineer around these sort of things.

As for your example of an AC forcing a P-Tap in the wrong way: Definitely stupid and totally not covered.

Sounds about right, just checking. :)

Heh challenge accepted! J/k...

Anyone else having issues with image tearing in pretty much all input modes? when I plug my camera in and wave left and right the 7Q displays tearing in an area that starts about 2-8 pixels from the top of the image, is the full horizontal width of the image, and then is about 2-8 pixels tall. The tearing area seems to lag about a frame and is twice as tall and twice as far from the top in FS700 2K mode as it is in HD or FS700 4K RAW mode. Also in multistream mode I see tearing between the top and bottom half of the image when one SDI input source is attached. The separation is a horizontal line halfway down the image and I havent tested other configurations in multistream, I just wanted to see if the issue occurred in that mode.

I contacted CD about it yesterday and sent them some more photos, but I was curious if anyone else had seen it.

Btw let me know if this is the wrong place for this, I dont wanna hijack the thread. I could move it to another thread.

It is a known problem I noticed it the first day I used the 7Q. However it does not effect the recording. It will show up in playback on the 7Q and on the external SDI out. It is most noticeable in a fast pan.

CD knows about this and it will be fixed in the next FW update, Dan Keaton assures me of this. It is a display problem. Not a recording problem, it will not show up in your NLE.

OK thanks for responding, that's kinda what I figured given the nature of the problem, but it's good to hear its a known issue and not that big a deal if it doesnt affect recording. I mentioned it to CD and their first response didnt seem to know what I was talking about since they referred to another known debayer issue where the far left/right column shows up red/purple in RAW mode. I probably just didnt describe it well enough though.

Got my media in yesterday. Panicked for a second as I couldn't find anything digging through the box of styrafoam peanuts. Those guys are tiny. Now just waiting for my monitor from Abelcine .

As Olof noted, we do know about it and are working on a fix. Only an issue in the monitoring, not recording. Sorry about that.

We've had our Odyssey 7Q for a couple of weeks now, overall, we're very happy with it, it's a great unit, looking forward to the extended functionality with the future firmware releases. Haven't managed to do any extended tests yet, but have still found some interesting bonuses, one or two things we'd like to see changed, and there's a couple of bits that aren't quite making sense.

First of all, some nice unexpected surprises:

- When shooting in high speed in 1920 x 1080, when you hit the trigger to dump the buffer to SD card, the Odyssey also picks up the signal and records the output (for anyone that's not in the know, when the buffer is dumped to SD card, the 3G-SDI pushes out an uncompressed 50/60p signal at the same time), so the Odyssey also provides a very simple way to record HD HFR at broadcast quality data rates
- When shooting in 2K raw, the camera info is not sent down the 3G-SDI wire, even if you set display output to all on the camera. This is a real bonus to us, as it means you can also attach an EVF to the HDMI port and get camera info, whilst still keeping the recorded image on the Odyssey clean
- We've tested 2K raw at 200 fps across an elbow connector, to a soldered joint and then across a 100ft cable, no issues with the signal (although adding a barrel and a further 30 ft of cable sent the Odyssey into a flat spin).

A few things that we'd like to see in future releases:

- Transport controls on playback : fast forward, fast rewind, and the ability to delete would be great!
- Mixed recording. Referring to Mitch's comments about this, we have had no issues recording 2K raw and uncompressed to the same drive, provided that the raw is at 100 (120) fps or less. When we push up to 200 fps, the drives are configured as RAID (to allow for the amount of data that needs to be written). If the drives have already been written to in uncompressed mode, then the unit can't configure them as RAID as they are no longer in sync... although it is possible to shoot in 200 fps initially and then push down to lower frame rates and non RAID access afterwards. As others have said, that doesn't really suit our way of shooting, we often flip in and out of 200fps during a shoot, changing drives is an overhead we don't need. Also there's a good chance of hitting record by accident when sat on lower frame rates, if you do that then you've just disable that drive set for the higher frame rates. Understood that future firmware release is supposed to allow mix recording, just wanted to clarify that it would address this... if not, as a simple suggestion, why not allow the user to set the unit ot always use RAID, even for lesser data rates that don't actually need it. That way, the drives are always in sync...
- Clean output : at the moment, any info the Odyssey (e.g waveform, histogram etc) is also pushed out to the SDI. We'll be using the Odyssey on live shoots sometime as midway monitor and local record, feeding off to an OB truck. Checking exposure etc locally is needed, but we don't want that info to get pushed on to the OB
- End trigger record for HFR : I know this has already been mentioned, however end trigger record for HFR action is pretty much the only way we shoot. Understood there's going to be an on-board memory limitation, as a suggestion how about setting up a looped record for a configurable amount of time, pressing stop on record would effectively be the end trigger?

And finally, a question to anyone that's in the know. When shooting raw, what effect does the gamma curve have on the output signal? Surely it's raw, so should record the same regardless of the gamma? But we are seeing difference, all be it small, on the histogram and waveform when switching between Cine2, Cine4 and s-log2? And on similar, what ISO is the camera working at when in raw? It doesn't seem to marry up with the suggested values, I'm certainly not seeing two stops increase in exposure when shifting from Cine2 to S-log2... or am I thinking about things in the wrong way?

First real trial for the Odyssey tomorrow, we are doing an underwater shoot for a music video, the NEX is going into an Amphibico Genesis housing, pumping a live feed via a 100ft cable to an Odyssey 7Q top side..... at 100 fps (hence the earlier mentioned test of cable, elbows and solder). Nothing like jumping in at the deep end :D

I can confirm that EVERYTHING you ask for is on our roadmap, with the exception of the high frame rate buffer. We have to see how much memory we can hold in a buffer at high speed. Might not be feasible, but we'll see. Otherwise, all the rest will come in time. Proper deck controls, mixed recording, clean output.

Lastly, not all RAW is the same. Sony bakes in some info to push it in a certain direction so that what is recorded is more of the stuff you want. Canon also does this but to an even greater degree. When shooting RAW on the FS700, it is important to set the Picture Profile to Slog-2.

Good luck on your shoot.

Hey Mitch, one thing that I don't like about the 7Q, (not that i've used one but I will be a customer soon), is the white labeling writing on the front face of the monitor. I wonder if it bothers anyone else. Sometimes i like to switch all camera data off and have a clean picture in a black frame. The text really distracts my eyes. I know there is some kind of protective film on the monitor face, and I'm assuming the labeling is printed on it. I would LOVE to have an option that has darker grey labeling. Think this would ever happen?

Also, this is probably a stupid question, but is there an option to turn off all Osyssey on-screen GUI?

There are no stupid questions, only obnoxious answers. ;-)

The silk screened lettering on the Odyssey7Q's front panel is fairly small and far from the image area of the OLED panel. We tried not to be distracting while also clearly labelled. I guess you could use a pencil to knock down the brightness of the writing a bit.

The onscreen menus will all disappear by pushing the HIDE button in the lower right hand corner. Tap anywhere on the touchscreen to make them reappear.

See, not a stupid question at all!

Apologies Mitch if this has been covered before- there are alot of pages to troll through now:)
Is the 7Q able to take the stream and onscreen data from the FS700 LCD (iris, zoom,wb,record setting etc) then output this stream and data to an EVF without it being burnt into the recorded SSD's?
Essentially I would like my EVF to act the same as the LCD does on the FS700, downstream from the 7Q- without having to look over my shoulder at my settings.

Thanks.

No, at least not currently.

The FS700 has two outputs, HD-SDI and HDMI. When shooting HD video, if the onscreen display is output then it will go to both the HD-SDI and the HDMI, which means it will be recorded by the Odyssey7Q. When shooting RAW, the HD-SDI (now a RAW data feed) will not show the display, but the HDMI will. In the future we will be able to show one input on the OLED screen while recording the other, but I do not know if we will be able to mix these two, and I do not think the camera will be able to send an appropriate signal when shooting at all frame rates.

I might have missed it on here... thought I've been following thgis thread fairly close. But, what is the reason there is not the ability to delete clips on the 7Q. Seems like that is something one would want to do quite frequently given the amount of data that coiuld get eaten up on one shot to only end up as an unusable bad take. Anxiously awaiting ours... been on pre-order since the first week in May from Abel Cine.
