Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Can't answer for what our future "high quality HD" system will be. To be clear, the current monitoring system does not deBayer at all, which is the same as on the Canon cameras.

I know superpixel downscaling is not traditional debayering, and I know it isn't common to think so, but I still think it could be classified as debayering even if it doesnt take full advantage of the bayer pattern since the image going in is bayered and the image coming out is not, so technically it is de-bayered :)

It is the same method as the C100/C300, but it's hard to know exactly what the C100/300's OLPF and processing combo adds to their images. They did have to do a firmware update to fix the heavy color aliasing issue with highlights, so the 7Q may have to deal with similar issues. Mitch I'm sure you've seen the output of those cameras, so would you say it is quite comparable in terms of sharpness/aliasing/pixel accuracy etc?

Okay, cool. Thanks for the answer Mitch. As they're still a ways off I'm sure you guys will come up with a great solution - and if there are any issues on release you'll be able get them resolved in good time.

Although it's been said before, I'd like to say:we all appreciate you taking the time to answer all our questions, worries and what not!

Noah, I've learned my lessons the hard way about comparing to other companys' products. I would respond that I think the image looks quite nice, although I have not sat down and did a technical evaluation. Please take that for what it is.

Colin, thank you. It is my pleasure to communicate. We know there's lots of anticipation but there are also lots of quirks and unique features. Answering these questions helps the community learn as well as guide us in what we need to do and how we need to outreach.

Mitch, will the 7 or 7Q provide a live view display of de-squeezed 2x anamorphic for monitoring, while recording in various formats? My main question relates to what model will be required for monitoring 2x anamorphic recording, noting the live view to be transformed for viewing. The recording aspect is welcome, although may be secondary for my current intended purpose. If the 7Q was required, then I would be interested to learn what record modes are available while live view de-squeeze for monitoring. Thank you, Mitch.

Not sure if this was mentioned , but do you think it would be possible to record higher frame rates at the lowest resolution of 1080p say at 480 or 960fps with the Odyssey in the future?

Currently we do not offer anamorphic desqueeze of any kind. If it is to be a feature in the future it will undoubtably be on the Odyssey7Q.

It is all a question of how the signal is output from whatever camera. If it is done in a way compatible with the Odyssey7Q then we can accept it.

We are working with many more cameras than just the FS700. Some of these cameras have not yet been released or even announced.

Hey Mitch, the ability to dial in any aspect ratio (like small hd) should absolutely be implemented. I need this feature!

Custom framelines will come in a future update. Currently the frame lines are 1.85 & 2.39. A few more presets are on the way as well.

Sorry, I haven' read through this whole thread, but how is other "high quality codec" (Pro Res) coming along? I won't be ordering until this is available.

Mitch, thank you for your reply. Back in August, Andy Mangrum at CD replied to one of my emails noting that the 7Q will essentially being taking on the Gemini 4:4:4 capabilities, which include anamorphic record modes and, as I understand the Gemini 4:4:4 capabilities, a desqueeze live view for monitoring. This desqueeze monitoring will become more useful with the screen real estate the 7Q provides with the larger 7" screen. My main question remains, and for CD to consider and disclose in the future, given that a number of professional monitors on the market provide the ability to 'live view' 2x anamorphic desqueeze, either as a preset, or ability to enter the monitor menu and manually apply a 50% reduction to the vertical axis (X axis), is it fair to say that the Odyssey 7 (not 7Q) will have a preset or ability to live view only (not record), 2x anamorphic desqueeze? Those who want to only monitor anamorphic, and not record to an external recorder may find having to purchase a 7Q just to monitor anamorphic will be expensive compared to other monitor only options. I think the 7Q makes the most sense to me, just some thoughts and I would appreciate any feedback that you and/or the CD team have to share, in due course. Thank you.

Let me look into this and get back to you. I'm not sure if the Odyssey7 has the horsepower internally for this. The 7Q has way more logic gates available in the processor.

Mitch, thanks for your help!

Does the USB port on the Odyssey output at least 1A @ 5V to power a paralinx sending out the signal from the HDMI out? ;)

Sorry, I meant the ability to dial in a proper desqueezed aspect ratio for any anamorphic shooting on any sensor. Small hd allow you to change ratio for any signal you throw at it. If you could enable this, AND allow it to pass out the sdi to another monitor the 7q would be practically PERFECT!!!

No, however the RMT (Remote) port a couple of inches below the USB port will output 1A @ 5V no problem. We can manufacture a custom cable or if you have a preferred cable maker we can provide the connector and pin-out info.

Let me look into it. Although I don't know why anyone would need anything other than 1.33x and 2x anamorphic de-squeeze.

Thank you, Mitch. I would be surprised if a 2x desqueeze 'live view' only was not possible with the O7, although the O7Q is still my preferred choice. Up to 4 cam HD-SDI 1080p compressed recording, all timecode matched would make my post editing work so much easier if the footage I received came from an O7Q. Suggesting this option to someone now, while I have one earmarked also. I appreciate the follow up, and your communication and answering all these questions is outstanding.

They do not have it right now but it may be on our roadmap of feature updates in firmware. The firmware update list we published recently on notes some of the major points. We have dozens of items not noted that we have plans to initiate. I'm just not certain what or when at the moment -- it's the weekend.
