Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

We could theoretically record 4K uncompressed DPX files, but we currently do not. This has nothing to do with Sony. The reason we don't is that such files would be insanely large, and we really question whether anyone would really want such a thing. I don't have the math in front of me, but I think 4K DPX file (that means a frame each of R, G & B) at 24fps would give you maybe 20 min. on 1TB of memory. It's frickin' huge. Does anyone really want to deal with that?

Actually - I've a project coming up where having 4K, any sort of 4K, would be greatly appreciated - It's needed for VFX background plates, so I don't need long record times. So if you could give me the option when I get the recorder in a couple of weeks, I'd be immensely happy (is all I'm saying...) Of course I'll switch to 4K compressed when that's available, but sometimes it might be useful to have the beast...

Hmmm... Is it possible to use the Q7 as waveform monitor / preview monitor on an iMac? Output via HDMI into the Odyssey from Premiere?

As long as the signal to the Odyssey7Q is a standard HD video signal, we can certainly accept it and apply our various monitor functions to the signal.

Has anyone got shipping notices yet? I didn't order mine from Abelcine until August so I'm probably down the list a ways but was wondering if anyone else was getting them.

I ordered mine in early July from AbelCine in Chicago. Last I checked, they didn't know how many units they were getting in. Hopefully I'll get mine relatively soon.

I just got my tracking number. I was apparently the number 3 preorder from nanoflash.net, back in March. I'll have mine by Monday. you'll hear from me ; )

Congratulations!

Mitch:
On page 12 of the O7Q user manual, there is a selection of cameras, supporting the record trigger. Sony F3 or ARRI Alexa are compatible, Sony NEX FS700 is not listed. Is this going to be a permanent issue? Or could support be added in a later firmware update?

I guess you guys will not stop development after Q1.2014, will you?

That list starts off with "Compatible cameras include," which doesn't mean that any specific camera is not included. I believe the FS700 will trigger the Odyssey7Q when in HD video output mode. I know it will in RAW output.

To return for a moment to our FS700 4K RAW to HD video functionality, I wish to explain this again in a bit more detail.

As is this is designed basically for monitoring purposes, but the quality is quite good. We take the 4K image and do not deBayer it, instead simply taking a group of four photosites (2x green, one red, one blue) and turn those values into one pixel. This is essentially what Canon does n the C100, C300, C500.From this we can output 1920x1080 HD in 4:2:2 or even 4:4:4. Currently we do not record this, although we plan to do some tweaking to improve the image a bit and we will record it. So you get excellent HD derived from the 4K RAW which greatly exceeds the image quality you can capture directly from the camera's 8-bit output.

The signal that's output is not the very best we can do, but it looks pretty darn good. And we're only going to make it better. S-log2 or REC709 available in this output.

Thanks for that explanation Mitch. That's pretty interesting. So if we had something like the Blackmagic Hyperdeck hooked up to the output we would be able to get 10-bit 4:2:2? If so, this might be a good temporary solution until you guys release this feature more polished in the 7Q

It's worth a look at certainly, thanks for the explanation and i won't ditch the shuttle just yet!

I assume as it is reading the 4K RAW, then the 700 upgrade software pack is needed? I have no issue getting this but if there's no 4K in it then was going to hold off until that's available. I can test the 2K RAW with a watermark first and perhaps change my mind though.

When you say you plan on tweaking, would the higher quality work mean scaling a debayered 4K image down or still using the same, but improved, binning techniques - can the 7Q downsample that 4K stream in real time? I would have thought (but could be wrong) a downsampled debayered image would be higher quality that a binned image?

thanks
Paul

Awesome! The future ahead of schedule ;-)

I think the Sony "Strategic Marketing Manager for Entry Level Production products." Is now regretting following me on Twitter as I've started badgering him about letting CD record the 4K Raw on the O7Q!

If you're on Twitter he's @SonyProEurope and I'm @colinelves - feel free to join me and let's see if we can turn my little tweets into a giant ROAR!
