Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q - Major Announcement - Convergent Design

Dan, I suspect huge places like B&H will get a large supply but almost cartainly have vastly larger demand for preorders. I just placed a preorder with AbelCine out of Chicago, do you expect for there to be adequate amount for these smaller places to fulfill many of their preorders?

Dear Jshbckr,

Obvious: B&H is a very large dealer.

Less Obvious: Abel Cine is a large dealer also.

And we have other large dealers also.

I have been away from this forum for a while until this past Saturday. I was busy calling each of our dealers in the United States.

Our distributors around the world are in touch with their dealers.

I have been attempting to get our dealers to place pre-orders so that they will have access to the units that we will be building in a fair and consistent manner.

We attempt to be very fair in our pre-order program. We do not allow any one dealer to monopolize all of the units, we attempt to ensure that all dealers have fair access to the units.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,

Dan congratulations on getting the prices down. I imagine you had to do some persuading in the firm:)
It's still a bit pricey but at least CD showed that they're listening (taking into account that this wasn't planned in advance:):))
This is the business model of the 21. century. Maybe some other firms should take yours as an example.

I'm really looking forward for the Odissey7(Q). For me it's The dream monitor (except for the size maybe, my preferences lie in the smaller monitors).

Dear Sanjin,

We worked as a team to get the prices down.

I am very happy that you like our monitor.

Yes, a 5" monitor would be smaller, but one gets so many benefits by having a 7" (in our case 7.7" monitor), and the OLED's are great for monitoring.

Dan,
any news on another codec option besides Avid...?
I really want this monitor, but can´t switch my post workflow for it...

Thanks!

Mr. Dan Keaton,

I was wondering if you could answer a few questions, or ask the engineers.

1. If the FS700 is in a mode to capture, lets say 2k@240fps, but I haven't pressed record on the camera, does the camera still output a video stream at 2k@240fps that can you record with the Odyssey, or does the camera need to be recording before that happens?

2. How does the Odyssey7Q handle "End Trigger Mode" from the camera, which is the mode where the camera is high speed recording to a buffer, but only stores the last x seconds when you hit the record button?

3. If the 7Q doesn't handle End Trigger Mode, what will happen if I am in End Trigger Mode, and I press the record button to store what is in the buffer, will the 7Q start recording?

4. I saw on the CD website that there is supposed to be some sort of optional remote control? I was wondering if you could explain this a bit more, is it a simple record/stop type of thing?

Thanks!

How is this powered or what options are there? My TVLogic monitor has a nice Sony L-series battery plate on it and is powered a long time from the med/larger L batteries, which are also very easy to find.

Dan,

Got my preorder on a 7Q in and have sent my FS700 in for the upgrade. I have no doubt that this is going to be a great gear addition. I do, however, have a couple of questions for you. I saw on the site that there will be multiple batteries supported, but I'm wondering about the specifics. I have multiple smaller batteries such as used by the fs700 or the HVX200 and I have sony vmount bats as well, I hoping one or more of these would work. When one is available, I'm also hoping that CD will post a operation manual on the web site. This would help folks become familiar with how the interaction will work while waiting for the units to arrive (there are some of us who still read manuals :) ). Do you think it would be possible to post the manual?

I'm pretty sure this is just the beginning of my questions.

Thanks,
Chuck

Dear Mister Dan Keaton,

First a big THANK YOU !

Then, my sincere apologies.

I know I was a bit rude when typing about the price of the SSD's. Looks like you and the Convergent Design team listened to our complaints and adjusted your prices accordingly, so hats off !

Now I can say that I'll be one of your customers and will order an Odyssey7Q and a pair of 512Gb SSD's knowing that I'll pay for what I feel is the right price.

Good move, seriously. But... one thing really bugs me... The lack of 4K RAW and Sony's wrong behavior, IMO, to lock it to their own proprietary solution. Not a good move, really.

For me, the FS700 is the perfect indie filmmaker camera now it has S-Log2 and 2K/4K RAW. But why choose such a bulky, costly and inelegant solution ? If we wanted to record with an AXS-R5 we would have bought an F5 or an F55 or even choose to buy a RED camera. The FS700 crowd, an FS700 owner is just not this type of customer.

On the other hand, the Odyssey7Q is just the opposite, an elegant, affordable solution, with a great built-in monitor and a recorder with tons of features that we can keep in the future if we choose to go with an other camera.

So what would it take to force Sony to enable 4K RAW on the OD7Q ? Poor sales of the interface unit+recorder combo ?

I was thinking that maybe, if we set up an online petition and shows Sony that their customers are so disappointed and maybe angry and with the sufficient amount of pressure, they may cede to our request.

We need to do it but we need to do it the smart way.

In fact there are 2 features I want from Sony :

- Permit 4K RAW recording on the Odyssey7Q, even if it's only for 24p and no slow-motion it would still be a big win.

- Enable TRUE 24p output recording and not only 23.976p. I know some may argue that it's not a necessity and I understand them. But what a relief it would be in post to stay in 24p all the way long to the final DCP and not have to pull down audio, even if it's just 0.1%. So much time and money could be spared and I suppose it would not be too much complicated for Sony's engineers, there is even some room left in the 50i menu to implement it.

What do you guys (and girls) think ? Is this just my fantasy expecting Sony to listen to it's customers ? I don't want to sound provocative, I just want to an extraordinary tool to become even better and unlock it's full potential !

So, would you sign this online petition if such one is set up ?

Cheers,
Stéphane Blanchardon.
