Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q - Major Announcement - Convergent Design

Dear Friends,

I apologize for being away from this forum for a while. I have been preparing for this announcement, busy communicating with our dealers, and working with our team to improve our Odyssey7Q's user interface.

Background:

I feel that this a major announcement for us and for the FS700 community,
as we are making the Odyssey7Q even more attractive for use with the FS700 and many other cameras.

We want to support the FS700 community by making our FS700 Option as affordable as possible.
This included lowering the price of our SSD's.

Our FS700 Option is now called our Sony+ Option and includes support for many Sony Cameras as well as support for other camera brands and types.

(And of course, overall this helps us also, as we hope to sell more Odyssey7Q's.)

Announcement

We have been listening to our customers and potential customers.

1. They asked us to make our Recording Options for the Odyssey7Q less confusing.

2. They asked us to lower the price of our SSD’s.

3. They asked us to make our Odyssey7Q + FS700 Recording Option more affordable.

We believe that we have met these challenges.

1. We have realigned our recording options along camera brands, to make them easier to understand.

Sony+ Option ........Sony FS700, F3, F23, F35, F950, HDC-1500, partial support for F5 and F55 and many other cameras.
Canon+ Option ......Canon C500, plus other cameras.
Weisscam Option ...IndieCam, Lux Media Plan, Weisscam, P&S Technik, IO Industries
ARRI+ Option .........ALEXA, ALEXA PLUS, ALEXA M, ALEXA STUDIO, etc. (T-Link Required)
Quad Option ...........Multi-Cam productions up to 1080p30, genlock not required

The + indicates that this option supports more than just the cameras listed, cameras of other brands
will be supported in certain modes.

Of course, each Recording Option requires that the camera be able to support the desired recording mode.
For example, 4K cannot be recorded from a camera that cannot output 4K.

Camera's must have a HD-SDI or HDMI output to work with the Odyssey7Q.

If a Camera cannot output the video stream, for a specific mode, over HD-SDI or HDMI, then the Odyssey7Q cannot work with that specific mode.
For the Sony F5, for example, in 4K mode, 4K is not output over HD-SDI or HDMI, thus we cannot work with it.

For the Sony F55, in 4K mode, 4K is output over four HD-SDI Single-Link streams, and the Odyssey7Q can accept the 4K.

2. We have lowered the price of the SSD’s while increasing their capacity.

Our 240 GB SSD is now 256 GB; was $595, now $395. (US Prices)

Our 480 GB SSD is now 512 GB; was $1,195, now $895.

These new SSD’s are faster, supporting a continuous write speed of 420 Megabytes per second (using uncompressible video data).

These new SSDs’ use far less power, thus generate less heat.

These new SSD’s include sophisticated power-failure protection for the safety of the data, as did our previous models.

The 960 GB SSD will no longer be offered.

3. We have significantly lowered the price for the Sony+ Option, thus making our FS700 support far more affordable.

One can now support most all of the Sony Cameras, F3, F23, F35, FS700 and others (with partial support of F5 and F55) for only $795.

This option, along with many other options, support cameras of many brands and types.
We call it the Sony+ Option since the main focus is Sony Cameras, especially the Sony FS700.

Due to the low price of $795, we no longer rent this option. All other Recording Options may be rented.

Previously, to support the F3 + FS700 required two options, at $1,495 each, for a total of $2,290;
now both are supported in only one option, the Sony+ Option, for only $795.

I feel that many FS700 owners will want the ability to record using the wonderful new modes that has has provided via a hardware/firmware upgrade: 4K and/or 2K Raw in 12-Bit Linear, at 240 fps continuously.

Our Odyssey7Q solution provides a 7.7” OLED Monitor with professional features,
plus the ability to record from the FS700 in 2K Raw, in 12-Bit Linear,
at 240 fps continuous, and record compressed 4K.

Recording 4K to a very popular compressed codec is important,
as this will allow many to record 4K on a practical basis,
without the burden of extremely large files.

Odyssey7Q ...................................................$2,295 (US Prices)
+ Two 256 GB SSD’s .........................................$395 each
+ Sony+ Option (which includes FS700 support)......$795
+ USB 3.0 SSD interface ......................................$25

Our total is only $3,905 which now allows many FS700 users
the opportunity to more fully utilize the capabilities of their enhanced cameras.

Our team is working very hard to bring the Odyssey7Q to market, sometime in August 2013.

We do expect to have a backlog situation, as we expect the demand to exceed our manufacturing capability for at least the first month.
If you want an Odyssey7Q as soon as possible, please contact your local dealer. Many of our dealers have placed pre-orders with us.

Respectfully,

This is great news, $1100 less to get started with the FS700 now.

A question for you, Dan– When recording 4K, will/could the 7Q output a full 4K image on either the HDMI or SDI output? This would be useful for critical focus and client monitoring in studio, especially as 4K displays get cheaper.

Dear Max.

I will need to ask our engineers.

I do know that we will be able to output true 4K and Quad HD via four HD-SDI single-link outputs. This is an industry standard for professional 4K monitorings.

I just do not know about 4K over HDMI, sorry.

Any word on the pricing for the arriraw licence? Either out-right, or rental amount?

Dear Friends,

Our ARRI+ Option, which includes ARRIRAW for the Odyssey7Q, will cost $1,995 (US Dollars) and rents for $149 a day.

The camera must have T-Link output, as all of the original line of ARRI ALEXA's have.

This option will include the ability to record in the following modes
(which allows this option to record from additional (non-ALEXA) cameras
and non-ARRIRAW from ALEXA cameras.)

Did he just say that the Odyssey 7Q will record 14 bit RAW from a hacked Magic Lantern Canon 5D MK III?

Dear Jon7athan,

If you mean me, no, I did not say that, sorry.

Before we could record 14 Bit Raw, there would have to be an electrical interface, that could handle that data.

Maybe I am missing something, can the Magic Lantern Canon 5D Mark III output this data stream over HDMI?

Kind of, if i remember correctly, but the data stream is messed up by the certain things that Canon add to the HDMI feed.

If you guys could figure out some kind of CF card to HD-SDI cable though, you would be laughing and would make a fortune.

Hi Dan

I see the F35 is supported, great! In your response to ArriRaw you state "This option will include the ability to record in the following modes
(which allows this option to record from additional (non-ALEXA) cameras" Will the 7Q record "12bit" 444 in both compressed and uncompressed from the F35? up to 30P in uncompressed and up to 60P in compressed?
The F35 has to use "quad link" HD SDI to send 50P in 12bit 444, will the 7Q support this?

Many Thanks

Dan,

Sorry if its been covered.. a friend might be able let me borrow a C500... do you need 2 recorders to get the higher frame rates... thought I read you only need 1...

Thanks

Gary

According to the website, you will be able to record up to the full 4K Half Raw @ 120fps with the Odyssey 7Q. It's with the currently available Gemini recorder that you need 2 to take full advantage of the C500's high frame rate output.

Hi Dan, great initiative! And happy selling to you guys :)

I just wanted to know regarding the fs700, Will it be able to record the raw information and keep the 10-12 bit data in other codecs? HNxHD, prores.

Best regards

Dear Justin,

If you are going to be recording from the Sony F35, we recommend the Sony+ Recording Option.

The Sony F35 is a camera that we do not have in our lab, and we have not yet tested the F35 with either our Gemini 4:4:4 or Odyssey7Q.

We definitely want to support the 12-Bit modes of this camera, the F35. I just can't tell you when we will be able to test this camera to ensure that our code works.

We currently record HD (1920x1080) in 12-Bit, in full uncompressed from the C500. If the F35's output is the same, then it should just work.

When we get this portion of the code ready in the Odyssey7Q, we can try to find a way to test this combination.

The Odyssey7Q has the hardware to accept HD-SDI Quad-Link.

It is too early to tell if we will support this 12-Bit 4:4:4 1080p50 mode for the F35.

I hope you understand that we listen to our customers and attempt to provide solutions that they need.

Dear Gary,

The Odyssey7Q with the Canon+ Option, will record from the various C500 modes. Only one Odyssey7Q will be required.

Dear SKYLINE,

I am sorry, but I do not know.

The orders from Germany go through our distributor for Europe.

I recommend that you contact your dealer of choice.

You could then place a pre-order with your dealer, and then that pre-order will come to us.

Our distributor for the United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, and Africa has placed a substantial pre-order with us, so you should be ok.

It is important for your dealer to place a pre-order with our distributor (Symbiosis) so they do not miss out on being able to get units early.
