Odyssey 7Q Wierd Issue (Maybe)

Hello,

The other day I was using my 7Q and several times the STATUS window popped up. This window gave information such as the remaining voltage, temperture, etc. This window has never appeared in the past and I am not completely sure why it appeared. My only thought was that the unit was starting to get too warm, but it did not say anything about a temp WARNING. It was not related to low voltage since I still have enough voltage remaining in my battery.

Has this happened to any one else?

Thank you,

I had a similar issue with my now exchanged O7Q. Mostly the eject SSD menu popped open. My unit was exchanged (but it had other issues as well). Contact CD so they make a note, seems to be a fairly well known issue to them from what I gathered.

I took my unit out for it's first real test spin yesterday, luckily it was not a paid gig. I am still not sure exactly what was happening and will be contacting CD next week before I use the unit again, under the gun on a couple of edits right now due next week.

Basically the unit went a bit bonkers after filming for about 10min in 4K2HD mode. Everything was going fine but then upon hitting record for maybe my 5th clip or so, the screen signal seemed to start cutting out and then reappearing and automtically trying to record again. This kept occuring on it's own non stop about 15 times while I just watched it going hay wire? I hit the shut down button, booted it back up and it automatically was still trying to record again. I turned off the unit again, tried disconnecting from the FS700 and reconnecting, it said I had no signal and I could not get my picture back. Also, when I went to turn off the FS700, all display info went away but the camera was still on letting me see through the lens. I had to manually pull the battery off of the FS. It was a hot day and the 7Q did feel warm for sure so I didn't know if this was an overheating issue but the unit had only been in use for 10min before the error occurred. No temp warning and it said 46C on the temp gauge and the manual says it can operate at over 60C if not upto 70C if I remember correctly. So I don't think that was it.

Is this what the term false recording is that is listed under fixed issues on the user manual? I ended up putting the cam away for the day. When I got home I booted everythign up and tried using a different SDI cable. The issue was still occuring. I finally thought to reset the 7Q back to defaults and this seemed to solve the issue. Now it will record again on cue with camera trigger from the FS so I guess I have a solution if this occurs again. Maybe this is something that happens if you hit record, stop record, and hit record again before file finishes? I don't think I did this but I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility as I was shooting without a sun hood and it was bright making it hard to see the screen. I tried to consciously pace out my record stops but maybe that is what happened?

I just had a weird thing happen today where the 7Q was just a black screen and everything was flickering. I tried to re-boot and un-plug the battery, but it did not go away. After 10 minutes of stressing HARD since it was a real shoot I went it and changed it from 4K 60fps to 4K 24fps and then it went back to normal. I then switched it back the 4K 60fps and it was still fine. It happened once more about 20 minutes later and I did the same thing that I just mentioned and it fixed it again.

Fortunately, it did not happen again because I was stressing so hard. It just magically went away.

I've concluded that if your 7Q freaks out.

1) Remove the battery. This often fixes lots of things
2) If that fails, go in and mess with your settings. Switching things back and forth seems to fix my problem today.
3) Reset the 7Q.
4) Re-install the firmware. I had an issue where my menu's would not stay on. They would only show for about 2 seconds and then disappear. I re-installed the firmware and it fixed it.

I've managed to get by on every shoot so far, but yeah... there has been some scary moments. I do find that the steps above have fixed whatever issue I've had so far... Knock on wood.

Thank you everyone for the responses. Fortunately in my situation, I was able to easily deactivate/hide the menu when it did appear and it did not affect the use of the unit. However, I would love to get some feedback from Mitch as to whether this type of thing is a know issue and if it is being addressed in a firmware update.

I just had the same black screen and flicker issues you described... Will try to reset the 7q and reinstall the firmware.

The weird thing is that it still seems to record correctly. The external rec sign on the camera display shows REC, and as usual if i hit the rec trigger again it stops recording, but without the 7Q displaying anything.

Also if i pull the sdi cable, the screen magically comes back again, as if nothing happened - is anyone able to replicate this?

I was recording 240fps, using a Helicoil 3G cable.

Gentlemen, please report these issues to Convergent Design using our Support Ticket system on our website. There our technicians can track such issues and best assist you.

I am unaware of these issues as an ongoing problem, but perhaps our techs have additional knowledge. I can tell you that in the past I have seen that use of an SDI cable that could not properly handle the 3G data load caused the Odyssey to behave strangely. This could be the issue with the one post above where the problem was fixed by switching from 4K/60p to 4K/24p. That's a 150% drop in data load.
