Odyssey 7Q SSD's

Hi Mitch,

I wondered if we might be seeing 1 TB SSD's for the O7Q anytime this year? Will they likely be twice as much as the 512's too?

If they followed the same price scheme as the 256 --> 512 GB drives, they would be $1595 a piece.

However, I don't know if the technology is there yet for SSDs to be this cheap for a 1TB capacity.

I'm seeing 1 TB Samsung EVO's and Crucial SSD's for less than $500 already. I don't know about the "server-grade" SSD's but it seems like that capacity is out there now. It sure would help to have TB ssd's in dealing with 4K raw.

There is a 1TB SSD in our future. But I couldn't say when it would be. Our first supplier indicated it would be available about now, but that has pushed back as they needed to tweak the product to have the reliability and speed we enjoy so much with our 256G ad 512G models. A second manufacturer is also working on a similar product, but we will need to test when they are ready.

At this point we are hoping for something before the end of the year but it's really on them, not us. And with the current status we really couldn't give a clear indication as to price.

We've seen this sort of development cycle before. It will come fairly soon. Once they've licked the issues they will be fine and the product will roll out of the factory. Just not sure when or for how much yet.

Thanks for the update, Mitch. I would also be interested in 1TB SSDs in the future. Great to see that you guys are working on it!

I would like to see 128gb drives as well!

As someone who is hoping to someday be able to afford the 7Q, one of the big hurdles is the high cost of the drives. And since they're proprietary, you are almost forced to buy two, cause with only one you'd be totally scr*wed if it fails.
With smaller/cheaper drives the initial cost would be lower. Also for people only ever planning to use the 4KtoHD it should be plenty.

There currently are no 128G drives manufactured to the specs we require. And it is unlikely to happen -- manufacturers like to make bigger and bigger drives, because that's what the market always demands. It's not just our market, it is all the other industries in the world that use high performance SSDs. We are a major client to our supplier, but I suspect we pale in comparison to the military.
