I dont know who you guys, but I had enough to see how Convergent Design rip us off on their super-duper-ultra SSD disks which are normal Toshiba THNSNHxxxGCST.
Soooo I grab two of them, did some tweaks and viola. Works like a charm. All recording modes without problem. Two times cheaper. Thank you.

So please CD. Do special release fix for your devices and let to ALL USERS decide which drives they want to use...
...or somebody else will release it.

cheers!

Well that's a pretty harsh way to categorize a company that has done a really good job of responding to their customers.

But you're not wrong about the fact that someone else WILL find a way to do it if they don't. So perhaps they might be well advised to do so.

Oh, and your first post as a member is bashing a company that is active and well liked here...so that's probably a really bad idea.

I've though a lot about it in the past two weeks...If you have the necessary IT skill, I'm sure it
won't be too difficult.

+1 real classy.

And I would not trust untested media with a paying client but feel free to roll the dice on your stuff.

Well I imagine it's not that tough to test media before trusting it on a shoot. Probably a good idea to do that even with CD's SSDs or any storage media.

Interestingly it looks like newer Toshiba enterprise SSDs have power loss protection like what CD describes their SSDs have, whereas the old series of Toshiba SSDs that the OP mentions does not seem to have PLP. Perhaps Toshiba developed PLP to CDs SSDs and kept it as a feature for their newer enterprise SSDs?

Those Toshiba SSDs sure do look a lot like the CD SSDs. What tweaks were required besides moving the CD SSD handle to the Toshiba SSD? Perhaps the filesystem or some software needs to be set up? Needs a particular firmware version? Or is it a more complex hack?

I wonder what CD is doing for their new 1TB SSDs considering that line of SSDs in the OP does not appear to go up to 1TB, maybe toshiba made them for CD in 1TB with PLP?

From what I can tell, the OEM Toshiba SSDs aren't much cheaper than CDs since they are an old model that is hard to find anywhere.

With CD, part of what you are paying for is peace of mind. Are they overpriced? A bit. I suggest you look into the cost of a Red 512 mini mag, again you are paying for something that works all the time in adverse conditions with the camera or recorder they are designed for. These are not Kias they are Lambos.

wow, did you just make that comparison? Kias have much better reliability ratings that Lamborghinis! hahaha

In all honesty, I would prefer NOT messing with what has been working flawlessly to date. If the cost is half however, that becomes more inviting. One of the reasons I chose the FS700/7Q combo over a Scarlet package was the cost of media. Currently most of my work is short form. However if I need to gear up for a doc or feature work, I'm going to need many more SSDs. That adds up quick.

Yeah haha, I did make that comparison, you are assuming (amusing?) that when owning a Lambo you are not going to spend the money on maintaining it to operate at peak performance. Granted the Kia just keeps going. The comparison I am making is that the Lambo will outperform the Kia but it does require the proper care- i.e. a committed operator/owner. And, parts are expensive. FS700/7Q is the best package for the price/performance going. You will be using that q7 for many years, even if you move away from the FS700.

Ok. So you find it ! But do you really think that people who spend six figures amount of money for their gear will have the time and will to take the risk and save few hundreds, when this company has an online 24/7 support phone, helps clients everyday and night, solves warranties in a minute and also takes care of old customers helping them with trade in programs ? They sell it more expensive ? Would be strange if it was the other way but remember that CD is offering us a top recorder for the price of a monitor. PLEASE take in account all the work they did, countless hours for developing, their expenses like rent etc. It's honest money. Would you prefer a Codex maybe ? What would you say about these guys ?

I already own CD media, so im biased from that.

But i have to concur it really gives me peace of mind that i can blame CD to my client, if their media fails me. I also have a support team in my back.

Somehow i dont think Toshiba will give a hoots about my missing recordings if something happens.

Well said. I'm a CD happy customer. I've been happy with their Nano flash and just used it yesterday for a long long recording a show from HDSDI :) and now I'm a satisfied Odyssey Q+ owner.

The wording of the post was indeed trollish, but interesting subject regardless.

Can't say they are ripping people off, you know the exact cost before you buy....saying they are is just wrong

Seems to me like the Odyssey itself may be underpriced and they need to profit on the media and codec... I can't even imagine the R&D cost on something like this, fairly low volume (its not a mass market item) and add to that needed to work with camera manufacturers on what is and is not permitted to record. price seems low. I also dislike the whole proprietary media thing and would much rather pay more for the unit itself and be able to buy media (good SSDs) at normal retail prices.... ALL dives will fail its just a matter of when so it would be really nice to have easy access to the media no matter were you are.

Also the Odyssey has been out for a good long while and for all I know these types of SSD were not redily available back when it launched.

I'm always amazed at how little people understand about the SSD business. Just because it has the same model number doesn't mean it has the same components inside. There is a cost involved in being able to guarantee an SSD, and most people seem to miss a lot of details about this. IMHO CD has pretty much chosen the cheapest route possible for this. One detail (out of many) people miss is that CD has to buy these SSDs in bulk (in order to guarantee spec), long before they get to sell them. As we all know the price of NAND flash is highly volatile, so CD can't take advantage of big price falls in NAND prices.

I have pretty extensive experience with recording to non-proprietary media, and I must say I'm very happy with the proprietary approach of CD. F.ex. every major brand of CF cards have failed on me at some point. Yes, that includes Sandisk, Lexar, Hoodman & Delkin. If it doesn't die in the camera it will die in the computer. I have developed my own torture tests for new CF cards, which basically hogs my C300 & computer for an entire day. But that is not good enough, obviously. And it's very time consuming! I much rather pay for somebody else to do that!

I'm totally happy with my CD media, and in the near future when I make further media purchases it will be CD SSD media. The testing and guarantees they provide me with are worth the money--in my opinion.

With that said, I'm curious about these developments because if im ever in a position where I need to purchase more ssd's and cannot readily get CD media for some reason, say, in a foreign country where access may be limited, it could be a possible way to get something quick that could get me by for a week or two.

I wish the OP would chime in with more info...if indeed this is true and not just an unfounded speculation.

Never had a problem with the CD cards. I wish they were cheaper, but i wouldn't use anything else that's for sure! But with the new recording options, you might need less space than ever. ProRes LT (which looks great to me) i can fit 6+ hours on each of my SSD cards. Can even record 4 second burst 120fps in ProRes. The need for more space kinda disappeared for me, so i feel set.... with just two 256GB cards!
