Odyssey 7Q SSD Storage/Transport

Hello world!

I was wondering what folks are doing about storage/transport for their 7Q SSDs.

As far as I have been able to research, CD doesn't make a case for them, and I haven't found any aftermarket solutions.

I'm thinking of getting a pelican 1510 case and laser-cutting foam for my hardware, and was wondering if I cut storage inserts into the foam for the 7Q SSDs, if I would have to worry about static electricity damage or dust. Is an insert slot into foam for the SSDs a no-go?

What are people doing? Just store them in the monitor itself? What if you have more than two? Anyone find any cases?
-Thanks in advance, Rafael

Gyah... yeah. Um still in the antistatic bags in the same case (foam padded) as the 7Q. Or I will leave them in the 7Q. I'd like a small hard case with rubber on the inside like those small CF/SD holders.

We do plan to eventually make plastic cases for the SSDs but it is on the back burner as we take care of other things. In the meantime I would suggest using the anti-static bags the SSDs came in, or perhaps a small soft pouch from a company like Lowe Pro. BTW, the Odyssey SSDs are highly resistant to static so you can cut a slot in foam and sotre them that way. We make a case for the Odyssey with room to hold drives both in the recorder as well as in a bin on the side for more.

Any suggestions on a hard case with room for both O7Q + sunhood from Westside AV + SSD drives on the sides, anyone?

My current O7Q hardcase has no room for SSD`s.

The Convergent Design Odyssey7Q case will hold it perfectly. The foam cutout was designed for the O7Q without the slight extra width of the Westside AV hood, so you will need to shave back the foam a touch, but then it will seat in the case very well. The case allows for two SSDs in the Odyssey as well as a side accessory area for more SSDs, AC power supply, batteries, cables, etc. The case itself is very petite and rugged, based on a Nanuk 910. Our custom cut case is list price US$150 and available from any of our dealers.

Here's a video that shows what it looks like:

The Container Store sells several hard plastic cases that fit Convergent SSDs well. I have one that fits 3 and another case that fits 4.

Thanks for sharing, ya'll! It's always helpful to hear how others are doing things.

So yeah, better to be on the safe side of the static damage issue, but good to hear I don't need to be paranoid about it.

-Mitch, the 7q case is truly a great case. With that said, I'm looking for a set-up where I can fit my camera, a few lenses, accessories and 7Q, all in a single case...for quick gigs. But If I were looking to have a dedicated case for the 7Q, I'd definitely go CD!

On that note, It would be great to see something in the near future like what RED does for their redmags: Plastic lid-case for 4 or multiple SSDs. (I hope you don't mind the reference) They have a snug fit so they Don't flop or bounce in transit. With a custom-made hard case, one could just cut a foam slot for the SSD case and call it a day. I know you have more important issues to deal with so I'll just be patient. :)

But funny how these little things can make a world of difference.
-Thanks again, Rafael

Duly noted and it's something for us to consider.

In the meantime, I have posted before about how much I like using TrekPak adjustable case liners for my camera kit. I use a Nanuk 935 case, which is the same airline carry-on size as the Pelican 1510 and Storm 2500. Fitted with the TrekPak insert kit for the Pelican 1510, I'm able to squeeze in a pretty complete shooting kit, complete with Odyssey7Q. In an old thread I have a picture somewhere of the FS700, Odyssey, lens, drives, batteries, chargers, wireless mikes and a bunch of cables all squeezed into this efficient case.

Edit: Found it. Post #7.

I'd recommend the TrekPak too after seeng Mitch's previous post. Only trouble is, getting one to UK/ Europe is very expensive shipping :(
