Odyssey 7Q or 7Q+ for the F35?

Both are fine. The only difference is 4k via HDMI with the Q+

The main issue is firmware. You lose the ability to record 50p with firmware versions from v2016-10 and later (if memory serves me right).

Why did they move backwards???

Why did they move backwards???

Because there were like 30 people shooting on F35s (who they'd been very generous in supporting so thoroughly), but they needed the dual-link protocol to prioritise their Apollo multi-cam/switching offering. So dual-link 50p video was sacrificed to that.

They did...none of the features added to the firmware benefit the F35. So if you need to use the 7Q between two cameras, you can roll back the firmware. But why not just buy 2?

I have bought 2 7Q's for under $800, they go cheap on ebay since the 7Q+ came out. 7Q should just be a permanent part of your F35 kit IMO.

Thanks yachacha, i’ll look into the 7Q.

I have been seeing those 7Q+’s and not really willing to bite yet, since i have two other recorders already.

I honestly can’t recall all the features added and changed at that firmware change. It was a decision discussed and not entered into lightly, because no one likes to remove a capability. But within the architecture of the Odyssey there was simply a limitation that could not be overcome and a decision had to be made. Even without the features added later, the F35 50p-capable firmware offers a ton of versatility. These days you can get the recorder pretty cheap and I agree that it should just be a standard part of any F35 kit. It’s also a great OLED monitor with tons of scopes and other functions, almost all of which are highly programmable to your personal taste.

I’m not with CD any more, but I’m pretty proud of what we did with that machine even for a niche group like F35 owners.

Thanks Mitch!

I am thinking it might be good to have two of the 7Q’s. That way i can setup up a 50p body and a 24p body.

Was great having you hear when the whole F35 revival happened! Thanks for your involwnt!

The little secret was that I asked an engineer about making the firmware mod to support the F35. It so happened to be almost identical coding to something we were already doing for a different task. He told me if I could get him a camera he could do it in an afternoon. We borrowed one from someone here on the forum and the engineer said he cracked it over lunch. Then we had to hold onto the camera for awhile as the firmware needed thorough testing and one adjustment can alter other areas, but in the end it was all of 30 minutes or so of programming time to support the F35.

Haha, wow! :D Can you reveal a secret to which Sony camera was it similar to?

P.S. I've just checked F35 used prices. Isn't that the best camera bargain at the moment? Found some going for 10K.

Even though the F35 is a Sony camera, the signal carrier structure for the higher frame rate HD was unlike anything else Sony. But it wasn’t that far off from what Canon did on the C500.

Ended up getting a 7Q+
Thanks for all the info, the coding and the good vibes. Mitch, what you guys did at CD, is definitely something to be proud of.
F35 lives. I recently got an Alexa, I still prefer the F35.... Alexa feels a little vanilla to my eyes... but still early days.
