Odyssey 7Q issue...

Thought i'd try and post this here first...

I still use my Odyssey as a field monitor and yesterday i started getting a flashing message saying..."low clock battery". I'm guessing there is an internal battery for date/time ect just curious if anyone has dealt w/ replacing one.

I'm going to reach out to CD but i don't know if they are still serving these devices or not.

Anyway, if someone out there has experience w/ this issue i'm all ears!

Thanks...

1. If you don’t mind the error, just ignore it.

2. CD charges way too much to replace a standard computer clock battery. You remove the 4 screws from the corners. (Use flat tool through the SSD slot to gently push the lcd way from the case. And you will see a replaceable battery. Pop a new one in and good to go for a few years.

Good to know. I did hear back from CD but we haven't gotten to the "cost" conversation yet because as you suggested, i've been ignoring the warning, but eventually need to get it fixed for the client end of things.

I have 3 of these and they all give me this message. Thanks for the tip!

How did you contact CD? I've sent them 2 emails but haven't heard anything.

Also, do you know how to get activation keys for the 7Q+? I don't have the RAW bundle installed and I'm trying to get it. I thought it was included with the latest firmware but apparently not.

You wouldn't know anything about how to activate the RAW bundle on a 7Q+ would you? I just got one and it only has the basic package.

I sent CD an email and got the following response...

Yes we still support all Odyssey and Apollo so please send your unit in for repairs at your earliest convenience please include the following: return address, phone numbers, issue with unit, shipping requirements, etc.

I just haven't gotten around to sending the unit in...nor have i reached out to get a quote on the repair. I use the unit daily and have just been ignoring the error message.

As for the RAW bundle, i believe it was a firmware update from years ago...so can't really help ya there.

I finally got the low battery warning on my 7Q+ this week. I was hesitant at first to take the unit apart, but it was pretty easy to replace it in a few minutes.
This YouTube video is pretty crappy, but I'll admit it was helpful.

The battery is a CR 2016, in case you want to have a new one standing by when you crack open the Odyssey. I had to run out to CVS to get one while the patient laid on the operating table.

7 years...gosh, I remember you announcing your next venture [after CD] on this forum like it was yesterday...oh, time.

The SDI A terminal broke today on my 7Q+. And input B cannot be used without A, so now I gotta decide it if is worth fixing or not. In the mean time, I think I'll order a Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5" 12G-SDI when B&H checkout opens tonight. Anyone have any reason to warn me away from the BM?

So, I dug out my old Atomos Samurai (almost forgot I had it) and the damn thing still works and will suffice for what I need to record this week. I'll still need to replace the Odyssey with something better eventually, but I think I'll wait to see what I find at NAB.

I doubt you will find a monitor/recorder that is both built as a tank and can serve as a weapon if the situation requires it. :2vrolijk_08:

I think you are correct.

Anyone want to buy a Odyssey 7Q+ with the RAW bundle? I think the broken SDI connector could be soldered back on pretty easily . . . for someone who has those skills.

There's a trick to still use the Odyssey in this situation if you're shooting HD. The Odyssey needs a signal in either SDI A or HDMI to function. So if your SDI A is broken the HDMI input should still work. But here's the trick: most people don't know that in HD the Odyssey is a two-channel recorder! You can send in a signal to HDMI and to SDI B. The Odyssey will automatically detect this and switch to dual-recording mode. You can set the monitoring to just show you the SDI B signal, and then when offloading the drives you can select to only transfer the Track B clips. Your record time is cut in half because you're filling up half the card with a video track you're not going to use, but it will work. If your camera has both HDMI & SDI outputs then this is pretty seamless and I like it for having the HDMI signal with all of the info display out of the camera while the SDI is clean.

Just one of the many powerful little features of the Odyssey7Q+ that no one ever matched.

Mitch, thanks for the tips. I will give them a try the next time I pull the Odyssey out. For now, the new Blackmagic recorder is working out great. I love the smaller, lighter size, plus having connectors at the sides instead of the bottom. I haven't yet decided whether to get the Odyssey repaired or not.
