Odyssey 7Q+ Help

Hey guys, have a shoot in a day and having problems with the 7Q+.

So I am new to the F35 and I set it up power through cam via lemo. Then Dtapping to 7Q. Works just fine. But when I plug in my SDI cables I get no signal from the IF box and a purple signal from out of the cam.

Could I possibly not have 3G cables? I rented the 7Q from a guy I know and he reassured me they are 3G. They are same length but different brand.

My firmware is: 2016.01.1336

I am running 444 12 bit on cam.

Thanks in advance, really need to solve this.

Just tried proress 422 with a single link to monitor out 1 and it worked. Do I have to set the cam to 422 as well or will it just go off of what the 7Q is asking for? All the presets on this cam are 444 and I haven't been in the deeper menu yet.

Also, does going out of cam and not IF box mess with things?

EDIT: Yeah the overlays burned in my image. I'm assuming that's why you can't go through cam?

Going through the cam SDI is find but yes the overlays will get burned in, hence the IF box.

To the others:
Wasn't there an upgrade via firmware or something to support dual link? How to tell if you have the right upgrade needed, etc.. ? Maybe that's the issue with this F35 and 7Q?

cheers,

You can record the monitor out just fine, just press the display button on side so you have a clean feed. Using the monitor out is useful for things like burning in the MLUT. I use my f35 quite often without if box at all. I wouldn't spread the fact that f35 needs if box to record.

you should see purple from a single link connection when the 7q is in 4444 mode.

My guess is that you haven't pushed the if box down enough into the dock. It is easy not to get it locked in but still appears connected. Check the menu there is a page which tells you what is connected to each dock. If its blank, the box might not be seated all the way.

even if the settings are wrong between the f35 and 7q , you should always see some sort of image. Usually sdi a is purple, sdi b is green. If you are gettinh nothing, your if box isnt communicating with cam.

So even when I press the display, I'm still getting a white box in the files. Don't know how to turn that off in cam. Tried to find that in the deeper menu but still finding it difficult to turn off.

I went into the settings and it says my IF box is in the rear. Does this mean the IF box is faulty?

How can I test this?

Update:

Got the marker off so I'm good to go on that. But I can't seem to get dual link to work. Getting a purple hue when dual linked.

If someone has any idea how to troubleshoot an IF box that would help immensely. I shoot tomorrow morning and really need this resolved. Thanks guys.

Is the 7Q set to 4:4:4 'Sony' input? If you're getting a correct picture on single link, then the monitor isn't set to dual-link 4:4:4 input. You need to change the input to match what the camera is putting out.

where are you located? If you are in LA I can lend you a box for tomorrow.

I doubt the IF box is broken but I am fairly certain that regardless of the format set in the camera, you should get something out of both of the ports on the IF box even if it is just garbage noise.

The only reason I suggest this: I bought an IF box from Japan that wasn't working. I took the IF box apart and routed the SDI cables to skip the audio board and go straight to the SDI taps. I wouldn't open up the IF box if it doesn't belong to you.

Basically there are 4 micro BNC connectors inside the IF box. 2 lines come from the dock and connect to the audio board adding audio to the signal. Then two micro BNC come off the audio board and connect to the SDI ports. To trouble shoot you can take IF box apart and skip the audio board. This task isn't too hard but it's not simple either, most importantly have the allen keys and screw drivers that fit screws to attempt.

Also when you open it, you should be able to see right away if one of the BNC connectors popped off or one of the cables got pinched.

sounds like you have checked the dock connection but I would suggest trying this a few times just to be sure. The ARM of the dock pulls the IF box into the dock when you push it down. Make sure you use the arm to pull the IF box down as much as possible. I don't mean to repeat this, I just know this has been an issue with my 2 other F35's. I have had to reseat the IF box a few times when it appeared to not be connected. The fact that the camera sees the IF box in the dock suggests that it is connected properly. Just reseat a few times to be sure.

I think you figured it out also but it sounds like you had some markers still turned on in the monitor out port.

I am home in a few hours, send me a PM if you haven't made any progress. I'm sure I can help trouble shoot quicker with my F35 sitting infront of me. From what I know, I don't think there is any menu option to turn off the IF box ports so I don't think it is a menu setting in the camera messing you up.

Is the 7Q set to 4:4:4 'Sony' input? If you're getting a correct picture on single link, then the monitor isn't set to dual-link 4:4:4 input. You need to change the input to match what the camera is putting out.

I think the problem is I am not even getting a signal out of the IF box SDI's at all. Even single link. Just getting it out of cam out.

Thank you so much for helping Yachacha. I am buying some allens and screw drivers now and am going to attempt to take apart the IF box. I think I am mechanically inclined enough to do it. But I may need your help once I got her open. I'll PM you if I do.

Update: opened up the IF box and the SDI's were indeed unplugged. How that happened I have no idea. The renter and I were thinking the shipping possibly.

So I'm so close I just don't know where they connect to. Does anyone have schematics or a picture? I found three connection spots but that concerns me since there are only two ports. So I don't think that's where they go.

shoot for pushed back a couple hours because of talent so I have the morning to fix it.

Thanks guys!

I'm away from home and therefore can't open an IF box and take photos or verify some of the information I'm going to give. That said, I've opened the IF Box many times, and this should be accurate:

- In the IF box, there is a small circuit board with the dock connector called the CN-2908. There is also a ENC-105 audio encoder board. The audio encoder board may be skipped without penalty (other than losing audio, of course!). Memory was that the sdi cables had little lables on them that matched the circuit board, but perhaps not.

- There are indeed three sdi connector spots on the CN-2908, and six on the ENC-105. The third in each set is "NC" - "Not Connected". It is for a return feed to camera not implemented in that IF Box.

Circuit board connector should be labeled.
HD-SDI A runs from CN103 - CN203 - CN205 - SDI A
HD-SDI B runs from CN104 - CN204 - CN206 - SDI B
Not connected path is CN101 - CN202 - CN201

You shouldn't damage anything electrically by routing sdi cables incorrectly.
