Would it be technically possible for the 7q to record 4k cineform raw from the fs700

If so I would like this to be added to the firware request. Id be happy to pay for the codec.

The 10:1 compression ratio gives you a nice managable data rate. Plus the the realtime matadata colour corection is great and needs no rendering.

Please make this happen. It would be AWESOME :)

Buy the Cineform codec for windows for $300 and convert your 7Q video in Resolve Lite. That's what I have been doing. It works fine.

Thanks regdmast. This is what I do currently with cineform pro, but importing and trancoding takes longer tha n shooting so we soon get a back log from the bottle neck.
Storage and backups get expensive quick using dngs.
CCineform raw means we fit 10 times more footage on our ssds. The workflow is lighter. Virtually lossless compression, Very much like Redcode.
Could we start a poll.
Who would like compressed raw?
Yey or nay
who would pay $400 for it?

A couple hundred bucks easy for a compressed RAW. Before the 7Q, I never though I'd like RAW of 4K that much. But after tasting the poison, I want more! Just in smaller file sizes.

but is this even theoretically possibly Mitch? I know you've mentioned that the current RAW starts off as compressed which the 7Q (un) compresses. The current issue is that the 7Q cannot re-compress RAW again.

EDIT: I meant, starts off as Compressed which the 7Q Un-Compresses.

But yeah, I'd pay for this.

Cineform is a DI, just like ProRes and DNxHD. While there are some advantages(mostly the 4k capability), Cineform is not a native codec to Avid Media Composer. I, sincerely, hope C-D makes good on their initial promise to provide DNxHD before adding anything else, codec-wise, to the O7Q. For anyone who thinks feeding an HD signal from the FS700 into a 10 bit codec is gaining something, that's just not right. The FS700 HD signal is all 8-bit. 8-bit into 10-bit is still 8-Bit. So, there's no advantage to using Cineform over DPX or Prores. 4K2HD(RAW signal) is the ONLY way to get 10-bit out of the FS700. If you just want to record in 8-bit HD, Prores is already there as a compressed codec. If you want a RAW compressed, wait a little while for the C-D folks to come out with, what I assume, will be ProRes 4k. I can see absolutely no advantage to Cineform.

As a small sidebar to cineform, they will sell you a license that works for either PC or MAC. If you want cross platform encoding, you have to buy two licenses. AFAIK, it's just not worth the cost.

Well, people want to save on space, AND stay in raw realm. That's CineformRAW.

Worked great on SI-2K camera as native codec. Not sure why it isn't used wider in other popular cameras - yes I'd love to see it as an option basically everywhere.

Just keep in mind that it is not the same as mathematically lossless cDNG compression, so you will lose data with CineformRAW. So it's a balance between ultimate quality (original DNGs, full data, large file size) and affordability (CineformRAW, partial data, still visually great, much smaller file sizes.)

Or with RAW 4 PRO (disclaimer: I wrote that program) - it takes original RAW DNG clips and retains correct timecode and provides audio sync (yes, in Cineform too.)

Outputs either in CineformRAW or in DNxHD, or proxies in small H264 files for easy playback/cataloging/editing/onlining.

Check out the silly video Bozo the Clown made for RAW 4 PRO's big 1 Year Anniversary! :)) https://vimeo.com/103655662

I have to tell you all not to hold your breath if waiting for something like Cineform recording on the Odyssey7Q. There are several reasons technical and otherwise, but in the end i will simply state that it is unlikely to ever happen.

Any advantage to transcoding/encoding to Cineform vs to ProRes from RAW? I've never used Cineform before

Well yeah, RAW... and for bayer-originated images (pretty much every photographic digital image these days), storing as raw bayer will always be more efficient. Prores is 422 or 444 which wastes 2-3x the space on interpolated luma and color data. Not to mention the flexibility of RAW, RAW development, and non-destructive metadata controls. Prores bakes in debayer algorithm, whitebalance, gamma, etc and takes up 2-3x the space for a more wasteful and less flexible container. It's also generally much easier to do highlight recovery on RAW. That said, for a lot of productions, Prores is just fine and generally an easier and more well adopted workflow as long as the RAW processing and transcoding is done properly.
