Odyssey 7Q DC Connector question

Hi Olof,

Any updates on if your small battery adapter is ready to ship? I need one ASAP.

Thanks,

Gene

Gene, I emailed you as well. The battery plates are on a truck, they should be here Monday.

I will post here as soon as I can ship them, as early as Tuesday UPS willing. They will mount on the Back of the 7Q and have a power cable to hook into the 7Q. I also now have the Swit batteries that power either the 700 or the 7Q in stock.

More details soon...

so its confirmed that the swit batteries will power the FS700 and the 7q without any problems , drop outs? if so , this will be alot cheaper than a V-battery setup

No you can't use 1 of the Swit or Sony batts to power both, but the battery will power either, that is why I wrote 7Q or 700. At least you only need to bring one type. AB and IDX batteries that deliver 55 or more watts can power both at the same time.

Hi Olof,

A questions about your battery adapter. Since you can mount the adapter on the sides of the 7Q, can it be mounted on either side of the center? Will the cable be long enough?

I know logically it makes more sense to have it on the left side (screen facing you) since that's where the battery socket is. However, my 7Q will be rigged off to the camera side left, so it seems the camera would balance better if the battery were on the right side of the 7Q, more towards the center of the camera.

Hope that makes sense and thanks.

I can supply it either way, I will have different cable length options, up to 36". The plate will mount in other places as well like my various wings or cheese plates for the FS700 and other cameras. I will post photos here soon. This will make it more balanced for shouldering.

My bracket for the Odyssey will also have a C-stand (light stand) ⅝" adapter and a table top plate option, this in combination with the battery plate will make the Odyssey very versatile.

I have an fs100 and an odyssey 7q. Would 1 swit battery be enough to power them both? I imagine the fs100 uses less power than the fs700, hopefully that makes the difference

I know that a lot of theory has been thrown around about the swit Batt not powering both 7q and fs700- was this ever tested- did anyone try it? based on some initial thoughts some thought it may work. would be great to not have to lump on another big Battery.

Can anyone confirm if the following combination will work in powering both the FS700 and O7Q....?

I've seen this combination used to power the camera and (other brand) monitor simultaneously. Will it work with the Odyssey when recording?

Are those available in the US anywhere? Looks like you can stack multiple batteries and adapters? is that the case?

I'd say you probably want the 25W adapter since the 7Q can pull more than 12W. And it says the batteries can provide up to 25W which is probably not enough to safely power an FS700 and 7Q since together they draw up to 25W plus there is probably some loss in the 12V regulator which would make it more, and it's never good to run any battery at the very limit of its rated capacity. If it isnt too cumbersome, I'd think stacking two of those batteries and one 12V 25W adapter might be a good option.

I believe B&H photo sells them. I'm in the UK and purchased from CVP.

You can't stack the batteries. The grooves and contacts for the battery and adapter are different - I guess to stop you accidentally (or intentionally) mounting 2 batteries together. I actually bought this combo to power my FS700 and monitor, but ideally I'd like to use it to power the camera and O7Q.

The 25W step up adapter should work though? I have no immediate need for HFR recording so am not concerned about the additional power draw required for this.

Looking at the configuration of the 25w module, I don't think it would physically fit on the battery when mounted in the FS700 as it wraps back around the side of the battery itself and this is not possible due to the recessed battery slot in the camera body...

Unfortunately, No. It's because the 7Q can have sudden power surges that exceed the voltage of the Swit Battery if it powers both the FS700 and the 7Q. For example, when you first hit record on 240fps per say, the voltage spikes up too high. I just use the regular 970 to power the camera and the smaller 770 to power the 7Q. I'm very please with the way I rigged it, so it's not bothersome at all even with the extra battery.

thanks fro the info Gene, would you mind posting a photo of your rig? I am like you... I am very keen on making this setup as small as possible. I dont want to make a beast shoulder rig either with a monster battery. thanks for your help!

There would be no need for the 12v regulator as the Odyssey7Q can work just fine off the battery's native 7.2v. It will power down to 6.5v. But I do believe that the combination of Odyssey7Q and FS700 would likely be too much for the 25w capacity of this battery. It probably has a thermal regulator inside it which would shut down the battery if you pulled too much juice. They can take hours to auto-reset.
