Odyssey 7Q DC Connector question

For the battery & charger from Convergent Design: We have not yet decided if we are going to move forward on this product or not. While we have them and they work just great, there are lots of battery systems out there in the world and we think that most clients would prefer to just buy more of the type they already use rather than invest in another proprietary system and then have to keep track of how many they have, what's been charged, etc. If y'all tell me that you simply have to have them then perhaps we'll reconsider, but as o now they are a back burner project.

Hi Mitch or Dan,

I'm still researching battery solutions and I'm leaning towards the Swit S-8972 small battery DC output socket to power both the FS700 and the 7Q. Swit Battery Link:

http://www.swit.us/s8972-dv-liion-bat8972.html

Some frame work towards my questions

Here's the power consumption specs

FS 700 = 9.6 Watts in 60i
7Q = 9-15 Watts (for both Monitor and Recorder)

9.6w + 15w = 24.6 Watts total for both camera and recorder

A Swit dealer who is very knowledgable about the S-8972 says it's able to power up to 25 WATTS without being stressed out. He did add however: "Yes, it should work (FS700+7Q). The caveat is I hear that Odyssey can draw up to 24W. If that is true, and not just an instant spike but a few minutes long power draw, the battery would not support it. To make it simple, the battery is able to power up to 25W without being stressed out."

My questions is:

1) Does the 7Q have "Spikes" or prolonged periods that can draw up to 24 watts? Or is it truly limited to 15 Watts MAX for both the monitor and the recorder under ANY circumstance? In the future, if you add some cool features to the 7Q, could it exceed the current 15w max?
-----------
2) The Swit dealer also mentioned that: "The Swit battery is 47WH. It will support a 23.5W load (FS700 + 7Q) for approx. 2 hours." I am assuming the 2 hours would be IF the 7Q was firing on all cylinders the entire time and drawing it's Max wattage of 15W. But realistically, often times the monitor is not recording or not recording at it's maximum wattage (Peaks and valleys of usage).

(question) So as an average, could I expect to get more than 2 hours out of the Swit under normal usage?

-----------

Thanks again Mitch and Dan. Your customer service is 2nd to none and is a huge reason why everyone on here is itching to buy the 7Q. Sony could take a few pointers from you guys.

The power spike is when you hit record. That's when data starts getting written to the SSDs. In most situations it will not get nearly that high, but if you're asking the Odyssey7Q to do some heavy lifting, such as recording to both SSDs at once at the high data load of 240fps, then that could spike that high. Otherwise it will usually be running closer to 10w most of the time.

I would say that most of the time you should get 2-2.5 hours out of those batteries and whenever you wish to shoot highspeed you should go to a fresh battery to be safe.

Gene,
Not sure which lenses you're using, but, I have the SEL18-200 powered zoom. Be aware that this lens is a huge power hog, if you use it, at all.

Hi Mitch, just to clarify. When you say "Then that could Spike that high," you mean it could hit 24 watts high, correct?

If so, I'll probably just use your Sony-L plate solution or maybe even your CD small Lithium Ion battery solution. Both of those should cover the 24w spike since the battery is only powering the 7Q, correct?

Thanks again,

Gene

The consensus I have come to talking with a lot of folks, is that the FS700 with the FW upgrade to 4K can cause the 700 to use up to 18w. And the 7Q may use up to 24w doing heavy lifting like 4K RAW to PROres incoming and recording.

So to be on the safe side you need 42w capable battery. So 2 of the Swits or Sony FS700 batts would be fine. It makes sense to use the same batteries. I am making a small plate for the back of the Odyssey with this kind of battery plate, I will have it ready for shipping next week. It does not cover the entire back of the Odyssey thus making it easier to mount in different configurations.

I also have a solution to drive both the 700 and the 7Q with an AB or IDX battery those are OK up to 55w. This I have in stock and I have been shipping for a year now, the 7Q is simply plugged into the 14v D-tap of the plate that also has a 7.4 cable to the FS700. This is an option in my shoulder kit for the FS700.

This sound promising Olof. I especially like the part about not covering the entire back. Any chance it will take Sony L-Series batteries? The smaller the footprint the better.

+1 about the L-series batteries. If you have a plate using these batteries, priced well and ready soon I'll be ordering one. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Correct and correct.

There are many solutions for power available, including Olof's products. Convergent Design makes our own batteries and charger, but frankly they are just a simple stopgap solution for the moment. Shipping Dec. 1st is our own back plate for the Odyssey with a Sony L-sries battery mount. That solution is only $75 list and uses the same batteries as the FS700. Or you can use one of our cables to an alternative power source.

Mitch,

B and H have your battery and charger listed as available as a preorder. I am fine with the l-series plate but if u stop moving ahead with ur battery solution will you let b and h know so we are able to cancel any preorders?

Hey Olof, it would be great if you could mount the Westside adapter towards the sides of the monitor and not just in the middle. On my low angle steadycam setup, I need the backside 1/4 20 thread free up going down the middle. Something really small like this would be awesome, but mountable towards the side of the 7Q.

I would even be fine with a velcro solution if it allows to place it towards the sides.

Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Off to one side is exactly what it will be to leave the middle open for my bracket and others as well.

Hey Olof, is there a way to have a battery life LED indicator on your adapter as well, since I highly doubt the 7Q can provide that with the different kinds of batteries people are going to use?

We have a stock of the batteries and chargers. When we begin to run low we will decide if that is it or if we will do another run. At that point we will notify our dealers of our intention to End Of Life (EOL) the product.

The Odyssey7Q gives a voltage indication on the Upper Tool Bar System Status button. It's present at all times (unless you choose to hide the menus).

Has anyone heard anything about a canon plate that takes 2 small batteries?

If you're thinking of Small HD style plate, I think that's what Olaf is making, but it's going to be Sony L-Series batteries. I think it might be just 1 plate though, instead of 2. Personally, I would just prefer 1 plate to keep the size down. I think one 770 should last more than 2x as long as 2 small Canon batteries (4400 mAh vs 1800 mAh).

Maybe the plates can be switched though, like how Small HD does it.
